Ah, the unassuming envelope of onion soup mix. It's more than just for onion soup (or dip). It adds tremendous flavor (and convenience) in all these recipes.

A chocolate cake from scratch made extra moist with sour cream and frosted with a rich chocolate frosting.
1 3/4 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
1 3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup cocoa powder
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup butter or margarine, softened
2 cups dairy sour cream
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
FROSTING
3 tablespoons butter or margarine
1/3 cup cocoa powder
1 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons milk (more if needed)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Preheat the oven to 350 Degrees F. Grease and flour a 13 X 9 X 2-inch baking pan.
In a large mixer bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda and salt, blending well. Blend in the butter, sour cream, eggs and vanilla. Beat for 3 minutes on medium speed. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until a wooden pick, inserted in the center, comes out clean. Cool in the pan on a wire rack.
When cold, frost with the frosting.
FROSTING: In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Add the cocoa and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture begins to boil. Pour the mixture into a small mixer bowl and allow to cool completely. Add the confectioners' sugar to the cocoa mixture alternately with the milk then beating to a spreading consistency. Blend in the vanilla.

This worked perfectly for me. Made it for my oldest son's birthday (he's a chocoholic). He and all his friends devoured it.
What happened . . . the cake rose beautifully, then fell! I followed the directions exactly. It tastes great, but I guess I'll give it another try.

Thank you so much. I love this recipe! I made two chocolate cakes this weekend. The second following this recipe and I must say, it beats the other one hands down :)

This was such an easy recipe and not alot of dishware required, which means less to clean up! I used a bundt pan instead and it turned out wonderfully. You will not be disappointed!

Great recipe, very easy to make and it came out moist and delicious. My only comment is that it fills a 9 X 13 pan almost a little too full, perhaps I will try it in a Bundt pan in the future. I didn't use the frosting recipe included, but I plan to try it next time. Thank you!

It was great and very moist. I under cooked it just slightly and it stayed moist for days. I also baked it in a bunt pan. It will now be my never fail cake recipe.

This cake is very delicious. We made it in a bundt pan instead of the 9X13. It turned out rich, moist and decadent. It's a must recommend and can easily serve 14 adults.
