ingredients
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg, unbeaten
1 cup unsweetened applesauce
1 1/2 cup sifted flour
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon water
chocolate or caramel frosting
directions
Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg and beat well. Add applesauce.
Sift together flour, cocoa and spices. Add to creamed mixture. Dissolve baking soda in water. Add to batter.
Pour into greased or paper-lined cupcake pans. Bake in a preheated 350 degrees F oven for 30 minutes.
Frost with your favorite chocolate or caramel frosting.
