A good bowl of oatmeal is hard to get tired of, but a great bowl like this makes waking up in the morning a pleasure. Whether you make the oatmeal in the microwave or on the stove, apples with brown sugar and cinnamon are a time-tested topping that makes healthy mornings delicious ones, too.
serves/makes:
ready in: under 30 minutes
ingredients
1 cup rolled oats 1 cup milk 1 cup water 1/3 cup raisins 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 apple, peeled, cored, and diced 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
directions
Combine the oats, milk, water, raisins, brown sugar, apple, and salt in an 8-cup microwave safe bowl.
Place the oatmeal in the microwave and cook on 100% power, uncovered, for 4 minutes, stirring every 60 seconds. Adjust the cooking time as needed until the oatmeal is thick and creamy.
Remove the oatmeal from the microwave and let stand for 1 minute. Combine the cinnamon and sugar and sprinkle it over the oatmeal and then serve immediately.

Extra Flavor
For extra flavor, substitute apple juice for the water in the recipe.
Pumpkins aren't just for pies or Halloween decorations. These large, orange gourds - while naturally sweet - also work well in savory dishes. They pair well with poultry and pork (and especially bacon) and their creamy-when-cooked texture blends easily into soups.
Ah, the unassuming envelope of onion soup mix. It's more than just for onion soup (or dip). It adds tremendous flavor (and convenience) in all these recipes.
