3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup shortening
1/2 cup maple syrup or maple-flavored syrup
1 egg
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Grease cookie sheets.
In a large bowl, combine 3/4 cup sugar, shortening, maple syrup and egg, blending well.
Stir in flour, baking soda, ginger, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, cloves and salt, mixing well. If necessary, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 to 2 hours for easier handling.
Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup sugar and 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon, blending well. Shape dough into 1-inch balls and roll in sugar-cinnamon mixture.
Place 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheets. Bake at 350 degrees F for 7 to 10 minutes or until light golden brown. Cool for 1 minute and remove from cookie sheets.
