Pumpkins aren't just for pies or Halloween decorations. These large, orange gourds - while naturally sweet - also work well in savory dishes. They pair well with poultry and pork (and especially bacon) and their creamy-when-cooked texture blends easily into soups.

under 30 minutes
ingredients
1 loaf French bread about 13 inches long
softened butter for spreading
1/2 pound sliced salami
6 slices Swiss cheese
6 thin slices boiled ham
6 thin slices tomato, peeled
directions
Cut the loaf of French bread in half lengthwise and butter both halves. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on top of the butter on the bottom half.
On the bottom half arrange the layers of thinly sliced salami, cheese, boiled ham and tomato. Put on the top half of bread and cut the long sandwich into sandwich slice. This is the basic sandwich to which chopped olives, sliced hard cooked eggs or slices or onion may be added.
Serve with pickles and potato chips.
