"Hello? Yes, I'd like to order a six foot loaf of Italian, please." This might be the most fun you'll ever have making a sandwich, just make sure you have help! You might not get any Guinness world records with this sub, but anyone lucky enough to eat a piece will feel like a winner.

ingredients

1 loaf (6 foot long) Italian bread
4 pounds thin slice cold cuts (turkey, salami, pastrami, bologna, etc.)
2 pounds assorted sliced cheese
1 head iceberg lettuce, shredded
1 quart mayonnaise
3 onions, very thinly sliced
6 large tomatoes, thinly sliced
1 quart kosher dill pickles, thinly sliced
salt and pepper

Optional

1 jar mustard

directions

Order a large bread from your deli or bakery. Obviously to do this one needs a large enough vehicle to retrieve the bread and counter space to prepare! Pick up the bread on the day you plan to serve this. It will fit into a van or many SUVs.

One needs a long table to lay the bread with board on. Slice bread in half with a serrated knife. One person is to help hold the bread and the other to slice.

Spread one half of bread with mayonnaise and the other half with mustard. Then layer on the meats and cheeses. Then layer the onions, tomatoes, lettuce and pickles. Salt and pepper to taste. Add anything else you want to (sliced or hot peppers, etc.).

Carefully place on top half of bread to cover. It takes two people to do this. Use long wooden bamboo skewers or very long toothpicks to secure sections of the sandwich together. One can cut a good 30 pieces, more if cut a bit smaller.

Unless one has a cooler to store the sandwich, it is best to prepare the sandwich just before serving time. It takes about 10 minutes to do this. Usually, however, you would want to slice the vegetables ahead of time using a hand mandolin or slicer. Vegetables are then stored in plastic storage bags the morning you plan to make the sandwich. Have the cold cuts fresh on hand as well.

The hardest part is having room enough to prepare the sandwich. The best part is eating it!

Finally, choose whatever side dish accompaniments you feel would be desirable.

Didn't bother looking for the long bread so used hoagie buns to estimate 6 feet long (fyi, took 10 of them). Quantities of ingredients were good and easy to make overall. Saved myself some trouble by buying shredded lettuce. Cut each hoagie into 3 pieces. Made small sandwiches so don't expect to feed 30 people, but you will get 30 sandwiches.

Tracking down the long bread was a challenge (finally got my grocery store bakery to make me one) but once that hard part was done the sandwich was a snap! You could cheat and use regular loaves of italian bread and cut the rounded ends off and put them together end to end but it's not quite as fun that way.
