Looking for a substantial substitute for steak night? Simple baked cod steak with butter and onions is just the ticket. Pair with some potatoes and dressed greens for an easy, elegant meal.
4 cod steaks
4 tablespoons butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
1 dash paprika
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a baking dish.
Wipe off the cod steaks and place in the prepared baking dish.
In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the salt and Worcestershire sauce and mix well. Pour the butter mixture evenly over the cod.
Cover the fish with the onion slices and sprinkle with paprika.
Place the baking dish in the oven and bake at 350 degrees F for 25-30 minutes or until the fish flakes easily when touched with a fork.
Serve the fish immediately.
Make sure the cod steaks are patted dry before adding the butter mixture so it will adhere more than just running off the fish.
Bake the fish uncovered.
Try adding a splash of white wine to the butter mixture for a different twist.
Garnish the baked cod with fresh herbs like parsley or dill.
A grind or two of freshly ground black pepper can enhance the flavor.
Serve with lemon wedges, if desired.
You can use unsalted butter and then just adjust the amount of salt to taste.
Yes, you can substitute with other firm white fish like halibut or haddock.
The cod is done when it flakes easily with a fork and reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees F.
Yes, you can add spices like garlic powder, lemon zest, or thyme for additional flavor.
You can use soy sauce or a mix of vinegar and a little sugar as a substitute.
Fish is really best prepared fresh. You can, however, make the butter mixture a day in advance and refrigerate it. Reheat it gently and proceed with the recipe.
Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 1 day and reheat gently in the oven or microwave.
Yes, you can add vegetables like bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, or asparagus around the fish before baking.
Serve with roasted potatoes, steamed vegetables, or simply with a fresh salad.

This was a super dish. We substituted Mahi Mahi for the cod and it was delicious! We also added 1 teaspoon of Shoyu Soy sauce with the butter and Worcestershire.

Used this similar recipe 25 years ago, glad to find it again. It gives fish a good flavor. I put minced onion in the sauce instead of slices on top.

This was so easy to do and soooo delicious. The ingredients were in my store cupboard so no problem there and it was quick and yet looked fairly impressive! I actually served parsley sauce with it and that went down well too!
