Imagine tart apples baked to perfection with a blend of brown sugar, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Then picture a fluffy, buttery topping that's golden and slightly crisp. Hungry yet?

serves/makes:

ready in:
  1-2 hrs

ingredients

Filling

6 tart apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt

Topping

1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons double-acting baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled

directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Combine the apples, brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl, tossing until the apples are well coated in the mixture. Place the apples in the bottom of the greased baking dish.

Place the baking dish in the oven and bake at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.

In another bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and melted butter. Stir the egg mixture into the flour, stirring until just combined (do not over mix).

Remove the apples from the oven and spread the topping mixture evenly over the top. Return the apple slump to the oven and bake at 350 degrees F for 25 minutes or until the topping is light golden brown.

Remove the apple slump from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Serve the slump hot with whipped cream or ice cream. Store any leftovers in a covered container in the refrigerator.
