- #18515
Bread and butter apple brown betty, a crock pot dessert blending spiced apples with butter-soaked bread. Perfectly warm and sweet, reminiscent of apple pie meets bread pudding.

1-2 hrs
ingredients
4 cups cubed bread, should be slightly dry such as day old bread
1/2 cup melted butter
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
4 cups cooking apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
directions
Lightly grease the inside of a crock pot.
Place the bread cubes in a bowl. In a small bowl, stir together the butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Drizzle the bread cubes with the butter mixture then sprinkle them with the brown sugar. Toss the bread cubes to coat them in the butter and sugar.
Place a layer of bread cubes in the bottom of the crock pot (about 1 cup). Top with a layer of chopped apples (about 1 cup). Repeat the layers.
Cover the crock pot and cook the apple brown betty for 1-2 hours on high or until the apples are cooked. Cooking on low heat is not recommended as the bread may become too soggy.
Serve the bread and butter apple brown betty while warm. You can drizzle it with a powdered sugar glaze, sprinkle with powdered sugar, serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or serve it plain.

Pumpkins aren't just for pies or Halloween decorations. These large, orange gourds - while naturally sweet - also work well in savory dishes. They pair well with poultry and pork (and especially bacon) and their creamy-when-cooked texture blends easily into soups.
