ingredients

1 pound cranberries
2 cups sugar
2 cups water
2 cups whipping cream
2 cups crushed saltine crackers
4 tablespoons melted butter

directions

Boil cranberries in water until soft and skins have popped. Add sugar and bring to boil. Then chill thoroughly.

Prepare crushed saltine crackers with melted butter. Whip cream; sweeten to flavor.

Cover bottom of glass bowl with half the crushed crackers, then a layer of cranberries, then a layer of whipped cream. Repeat process again.

This dish is very good served with fowl or pork.

  1. June Taylor REVIEW:

I was introduced to Gifta by my daughter's Swedish in-laws but I omit the butter because I'm vegan. It's surprisingly good because of the contrast of salty crackers, sweet/tart cranberry sauce and silky rich coconut cream. I know people who serve it as a side dish, but I prefer desserts that aren't terribly sweet.

Love gifta, but have trouble with 2 cups of water being too much and cranberries too soft.

  3. Camille REVIEW:

Be careful when making the layers - a neater layer means it will look better from the sides and top!

  4. Camille REVIEW:

This dish is a perennial favorite for my family at thanksgiving, and looks best in a clear glass bowl! yummy!

This recipe is much better with plain (leave out the butter) crushed graham crackers. Kids love this dish.
