This slow-cooker soy chicken is full of fresh spices that combine to make a super-flavorful chicken. Try it on rice or sliced up over ramen.

4 cups water
3/4 cup soy sauce
1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup Chinese black vinegar or balsamic vinegar
1/4 cup peeled and chopped fresh ginger
4 cloves garlic, peeled and lightly smashed
4 teaspoons star anise or fennel seeds
1 cinnamon stick
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 medium tangerine or orange, juice and rind only
3 1/2 pounds bone-in chicken thighs or mixed chicken parts
Mix all ingredients, except the chicken, in a saucepan and cook, covered, over medium-high heat for 5 minutes or until mixture is bubbling. Add to crock pot.
Add the chicken to the crock pot and cook on low, covered, for 4 hours or until the chicken is cooked through.
Remove chicken from pot, slice off of the bone, and serve over mixed greens or cooked rice.

Love buffalo wings? Get that same hot, zippy flavor in everything from deviled eggs to enchiladas. And of course: wings.
Ah, the unassuming envelope of onion soup mix. It's more than just for onion soup (or dip). It adds tremendous flavor (and convenience) in all these recipes.
