The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.

1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1 egg
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
Filling
1 cup almond paste
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons almond extract
directions
Mix butter, shortening, sugars, egg, salt, flour and baking powder in order given. Put 1/2 of this mixture into 9"x13" pan and pat down. Mix filling ingredients in order given and put over dough. Flatten chunks of remaining dough and lay over the filling. Bake at 325 degrees F for 50 minutes or until golden brown.
