Ah, the unassuming envelope of onion soup mix. It's more than just for onion soup (or dip). It adds tremendous flavor (and convenience) in all these recipes.
Hawaiian Fish Chowder

ingredients
3/4 pound salt pork
1 1/2 cup diced raw fish
2 cups sliced potatoes
1 cup finely chopped onion
2 cups boiling water
1 cup milk
1 1/2 tablespoon salt
black pepper if desired
directions
Select a strong-flavored fish for chowder.
Cut the fish into 3/4-inch cubes. Cut the salt pork into pieces 1/4-inch thick. Fry the pork until it is crisp.
Remove the pork and add the fish, potatoes, and onions to the fat. Add the salt and water, and simmer for 1/2 hour or until the potatoes are tender.
Add the milk and simmer 5 minutes. Season with additional salt and pepper, if necessary.
