The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.
German Semolina Dumpling

ingredients
8 cups chicken stock
1/4 cup butter, or margarine, softened
1 large egg
1/2 cup farina, or Cream of Wheat
1/8 teaspoon salt
chopped fresh chives (optional)
directions
Whip the butter or margarine and beat in the egg. Gradually pour in the farina or cream of wheat and the salt. Mix well and let "ripen" 30 minutes.
Bring stock to a boil. Scoop out farina mixture with a spoon and form into dumplings. Drop into boiling stock and simmer on "low" for at least 30 minutes. Serve with chopped fresh chives sprinkled on top. Reheats well.
