Hard to pick a more classic fair food than a good old corndog on a stick. A cornmeal batter with honey, flour, and egg turns some ordinary hot dogs into nostalgia-inducing treats.

ingredients

bamboo skewers
cooking oil
1 package (10 count size) hot dogs
1 cup yellow cornmeal
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons honey
1 cup boiling water
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup milk
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons double-acting baking powder

directions

Soak bamboo skewers in water for 20 minutes.

Heat oil in a deep fryer or deep skillet to 350 degrees F.

Dry the hot dogs off with paper towels and set on paper toweling to dry. You can also dust them with cornstarch after drying.

In a shallow bowl, combine the cornmeal, salt, honey, and boiling water. Mix well.

In another bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and melted butter. Stir the egg mixture into the cornmeal mixture.

Sift the flour and baking powder together then stir it into the cornmeal mixture and mix until smooth.

Insert a soaked skewer into one end of each of the hot dogs. Dip the hot dogs in the batter, letting any excess drip off.

Add the hot dogs to the hot oil and cook for 8-10 minutes or until golden brown, turning gently as needed.

Remove from the hot oil and let drain on paper toweling.

Serve hot with ketchup and mustard.

  1. kat REVIEW:

Had to add more flour to make the batter look like pancake batter. Rolled hotdogs in corn meal before dipping in batter.

  2. LisiPoo

Most of the recipes posted on here, call for cornmeal and flour, most do not specify whether or not the cornmeal and flour are plain or self-rising??

    • If the recipe calls for self-rising it will specifically say so. Most recipes use plain flour and cornmeal, not self-rising, so if it doesn't say "plain" you can usually safely assume that is what is intended.

  3. sweet mum REVIEW:

Added more cornmeal as recommended and then they were perfect. Messy but fun to make.

  4. LillieB REVIEW:

I agree with the previous comment. The recipe needed more corn meal for a thicker batter. After adding the extra cornmeal the recipe was delicious.

  5. CORNDOG MAN

THIS RECIPE IS WRONG. ONLY COOK FOR ABOUT 2 MINUTES 30 SECONDS AT 350 DEGREES. ALSO. ADD EXTRA CORNMEAL UNTIL BATTER BECOMES A PASTE.
