Black eyed peas are slow cooked in the traditional southern style with ham hocks (or salt pork) and onion and celery. Serve over hot, fluffy rice with cornbread on the side.
1 pound dried black eyed peas, soaked overnight in water to cover
4 cups water
2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 large onion, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
1/2 pound salt pork or lean ham, cut into pieces
OR
2 ham hocks, cut into pieces
Drain the peas from the soaking liquid and place in the crock pot.
Add the water, salt and pepper, onion, celery, and meat.
Cover the crock pot and cook on high for 1-2 hours, then reduce heat to low and cook for 8-9 more hours.

Not to be confused with evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk is very sweet (and very sticky) and used primarily in desserts.

Love crockpot recipes where I can literally throw everything in there, turn it on, and forget about it. We decreased the onion, used 1/2 water, 1/2 low sodium chicken broth, and ham hocks. It turned out great. I cooked in our Pampered Chef Rock Croc and did 2 hours on high and only 6 hours on low and they were perfect!

WOW, I have always had trouble making black-eyed peas like my MamMaw, but this one nailed it. I added 1 clove of garlic and a couple of pieces of pork neck along with a few pieces of salt pork, and left off celery (not a fan). I will be cooking all my dried peas in my slow cooker. Thanks

Super flavor! Used smoked pork and sauteed onions in butter. Cooking time for me was quite different -perhaps the type of slow cooker I used. 2 hours on high and 1 hour on low. I will definitely make again.

I made this exactly as directed and it turned out very good. The peas were very tender. I made it for a bbq we had last weekend and everyone liked it very much.
