June is National Dairy Month

National Dairy Month

In 1937, National Dairy Month was developed to acknowledge the contributions the dairy industry had made to the U.S. For the first two years it was called National Milk Month. In 1939 it because June Dairy Month.

Dairy Tips and Tidbits:

Q: How much milk do cows produce?

A: The average California cow produces 19,825 pounds of milk each year, more milk per cow than any any other state in the nation. That's 2,305 gallons of milk a year or about 8 gallons of milk every day of her milking period. That’s enough for 128 people to have a glass of milk every day!

Q: What products are considered "dairy" products?

A: Dairy products are foodstuffs produced from milk. They include cheese, milk, milk powder, butter, curds and yogurt. Eggs, even though usually sold in the dairy department of your grocery store, are not dairy products.

Facts:

It takes more than 21 pounds of whole milk to make one pound of butter.

More than 10 pounds of milk go into one pound of cheese.

It takes 3 to 3 1/2 cups of broccoli to equal the calcium in one cup of milk.
