ingredients

1 pound sea scallops
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 tablespoon lemon juice
salt
black pepper
paprika

directions

Preheat the oven broiler.

Rinse the sea scallops and dry with paper toweling. Place the scallops on a broiler pan in a single layer.

Combine the melted butter and lemon juice. Brush half of the butter mixture over the tops of the scallops. Sprinkle the scallops with salt, pepper, and paprika.

Place the scallops in the oven and broil 5 inches from the heat source for 3 minutes or until the scallops are starting to brown.

Turn the scallops over and brush with the remaining butter mixture. Return the scallops to the oven and broil for 2-3 additional minutes or until the sea scallops are cooked through. Do not over cook the scallops or they will be tough.

recipe tips

Make sure to pat dry the scallops before broiling so the butter mixture adheres better and the scallops aren't watery.

Serve the broiled sea scallops over a bed of creamy risotto.

If using frozen scallops, thaw them completely and pat dry before cooking.

Grate some Parmesan cheese over the scallops before broiling for a cheesy crust.

common recipe questions

Can I substitute bay scallops for sea scallops in this recipe?

While you can substitute bay scallops for sea scallops, keep in mind that bay scallops are smaller and cook faster, so adjust cooking time accordingly.

What should I look for when buying sea scallops?

Look for fresh sea scallops that are dry-packed (not soaked in preservatives), with a sweet smell and a slightly translucent appearance.

Can I use ghee or olive oil instead of butter?

Yes, ghee or olive oil can be used as a substitute for butter for a different flavor.

Why do I need to rinse the sea scallops?

Rinsing the sea scallops helps remove any lingering grit or sand.

How do I know when the scallops are cooked through?

Scallops are cooked through when they are opaque and just firm to the touch. Be careful not to overcook them, as they can become tough.

Can I freeze leftover cooked scallops?

While scallops can be frozen, they can become rubbery when reheated. It's best to enjoy them freshly cooked.
