Looking for a rainy day craft project with the kids? Try making this homemade playdough made from flavored gelatin powder, flour, salt, cream of tartar, oil, and water.
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
1 package (3 ounce size) gelatin powder (any flavor)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup warm water
Mix together the flour, salt, cream of tartar, and gelatin powder in a saucepan. Stir in the water and oil and mix well. Place the pan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the dough starts to pull away from the sides and is cohesive.
Remove the pan from the heat and continue to stir the dough until it's cool enough to handle. When cool, remove to a work surface and knead with your hands to fully incorporate all the ingredients.
Let the play dough cool completely then store in an airtight container.

Not to be confused with evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk is very sweet (and very sticky) and used primarily in desserts.
It may look like a sad little package shoved in the back of your freezer, but frozen spinach actually has a lot of culinary uses (and some may surprise you).

You can do the same thing with koolaid powder (the kind that you would add sugar to) as well. If you don't want to cook the playdough, you can bring the water to a boil and pour it in, that works as well well.

I edited the recipe to more clearly explain a few of the steps. I had a blast making this! As you can see from our photo, I made three different colors using cherry, lime, and orange gelatin. While the playdough is still somewhat warm it is a bit greasy but that mostly subsides when it's cool. However, you won't want to leave the finished dough on any surface that you don't want to get any grease on because there is still some oil in it. If you leave it out in the air it will dry. Takes longer than "real" playdough to dry firm but it will. If you want a color that you can't get from flavored gelatin, try using unflavored gelatin powder with some food coloring paste. Use the paste and not liquid or else the color will probably transfer to your (or your kids) skin. While the dough won't hurt kids to eat it, it won't taste good with all that salt in it!

This recipe turned out great. Needed it in an emergency when the store didn't have play-doh. I cooked it on medium low and had no problems with sticking nor wateriness that I read complaints about on other sites with this same recipe. The cooking must be the difference. Thanks, Savannah!
