- add review
- #1063

ingredients
1 pound whole wheat flour
1/2 pound strong white flour
2 teaspoons baking powder or other raising agent
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 ounce sugar
1 egg
1/2 pint buttermilk or sour milk
directions
Place all the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Slowly work in the egg and the milk, aiming for a soft dough consistency. Knead for no more than 10 minutes.
Form large rounds of the dough on a flat baking tray, stand for 30 minutes, and place in a preheated oven at 425 degrees F for around 40 minutes, or until the loaves are lightly browned.
Soda bread is a flattish loaf, served with meals and especially at breakfast with preserves.

Now THIS is the way to do it! Good job. So nice to get specific instructions, even though a goodly number of us know about assembling dry and wet ingredients and so forth, but sure is considerate to spell it out for newbies in the kitchen. And yes, it is delicious. Thanks so much.

This is a nice Tea Cake, but adding eggs, sugar, carraway seeds, raisins, etc automatically makes it something other than Irish Soda Bread. It good, but misnamed!

Made this recipe for our St Patricks Day party. Everyone loved the flavor. Real easy to make. A real winner.
Tradtional soda bread does NOT have eggs, butter, sugar in it. It is simply flour, salt, Baking soda, and butter milk or sour milk. Period. There are other more modern versions that have some flavor enhancements (caraway seeds, herbes etc)
