Taco Bell created the "Bell Burger" in the mid-1960s to compete with the popular hamburger fast food chains. It's no longer on the menu but you can relive this fan-favorite by making it at home.

serves/makes:

ready in:
  under 30 minutes

ingredients

1 1/3 pound lean ground beef
1 1/2 tablespoon masa corn flour
4 1/2 teaspoons chili powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1/4 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon instant minced onion
1/2 teaspoon beef bouillon granules
1/4 cup chopped green chiles or jalapenos, optional
6 hamburger buns
taco sauce or enchilada sauce
grated cheese (optional)

directions

Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat. Drain off any excess grease.

Add the masa, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, seasoned salt, paprika, cumin, garlic salt, sugar, onion, beef bouillon granules, and chopped green chiles to the skillet. Mix well and let simmer for 2-3 minutes.

Spoon about 1/4 cup on the bottom half of each hamburger bun. Spread the top bun with taco sauce. If desired, top the burger mixture with grated cheese. Place the top bun on the burger and serve immediately.

recipe tips

Let the beef mixture simmer long enough for the spices to meld.

Toast the buns lightly before assembling for added texture.

Customize the toppings with your favorite ingredients, like avocado or sour cream.

Adjust the seasoning to taste during the cooking process; tasting as you go is key.

If making for a group, prepare the beef mixture in advance and warm it up when guests arrive.

common recipe questions

Why is masa corn flour used in this recipe?

Masa corn flour is used to provide a unique corn flavor and slightly different texture to the beef mixture, making it distinct from typical hamburgers.

Can I substitute ground beef for another meat?

Yes, ground turkey, chicken, or even plant-based ground meat can be used as substitutes, though the flavor and texture will change accordingly.

What if I can't find masa corn flour?

If masa corn flour is unavailable, you can use regular cornmeal or all-purpose flour, keeping in mind that this will alter the flavor and texture.

Is it necessary to use green chiles or jalapenos?

No, adding green chiles or jalapenos is optional, but they can provide additional flavor and heat to the burger.

Can I make this recipe without beef bouillon granules?

You can omit beef bouillon granules, but the beef flavor might be less pronounced. You can enhance flavor with additional spices.

How can I adjust the heat level of the recipe?

You can increase the heat by adding more jalapenos or using a spicier taco sauce. Conversely, you can reduce heat by limiting jalapenos or using a milder sauce.

What kind of cheese works best for topping?

Cheddar cheese is a classic option, but you can also use Monterey Jack, queso blanco, or even a spicy cheese for more flavor.

How should I store leftovers?

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Make sure the burger mixture is cooled before placing it in the container.

Can I freeze the Bell Burger?

You can freeze the burger mixture for up to 2-3 months. Allow it to cool completely, then store in freezer-safe containers. Thaw in the refrigerator before reheating.

How do I reheat the leftovers?

To reheat, place the burger mixture in a skillet over low heat until warmed through. You can also microwave it, stirring occasionally, until heated through.

Can I use different sauces instead of taco sauce?

You can use enchilada sauce, salsa, or even a spicy mayo to create different versions of the burger.

What type of buns should I use?

Any hamburger buns will work, but you can also try using whole wheat, brioche, or any other buns that will work for the loose meat style burger. You can also use tortillas or pita pockets.

tools needed

Skillet: For browning the ground beef over medium-high heat. The skillet should be large enough to hold the browned beef and remaining burger ingredients.

Measuring Cups and Spoons: For measuring ingredients such as the masa corn flour, chili powder, and optional green chiles.

Spatula or Wooden Spoon: For stirring the beef and spice mixture while cooking.

Colander: For draining excess grease from the browned ground beef.

Optional Grater: If you choose to add grated cheese, a grater will be necessary to prepare it for topping the burgers.

what goes with it?

Nachos: Use the beef mixture as a topping for crispy tortilla chips.

Taco Salad: Create a taco salad by serving the beef mixture over a bed of lettuce topped with diced tomatoes, olives, and avocado.

Stuffed Bell Peppers: Use the beef mixture to stuff bell peppers, then bake until the peppers are tender.

Quesadillas: Spread the beef mixture between two tortillas with cheese and cook until crispy. Serve with guacamole.

Spicy Sliders: Use smaller scoops of the beef mixture and serve them as sliders with toppings like pepper jack cheese, jalapenos, and sriracha mayo.

Pico de Gallo: A fresh pico de gallo made with tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and lime is a great topping.

Creamy Avocado Sauce: Pair the burgers with a homemade avocado sauce for a cool, creamy element.

Taco Sauce: Drizzle additional taco sauce over the burgers or serve it on the side for dipping.

Macaroni Salad: A cool, classic macaroni salad provides a nice contrast to the warm, spicy burger.

beverage pairings

Wine Pairings
Cabernet Sauvignon: This bold red wine has enough oomph to stand up to the spicy, beefy goodness of the Bell Burger. Look for one that's rich and juicy with dark fruit flavors like blackberry and hints of oak.

Malbec: A smooth and fruity Malbec with its ripe plum and berry notes can complement the spices in the burger. Go for a version with a touch of chocolate to really elevate your burger experience.

Sauvignon Blanc: If you're in the mood for white, a zesty Sauvignon Blanc is a match made in heaven. Its bright acidity will cut through the richness of the meat while the citrus notes add a refreshing twist.

Other Alcohol Pairings
Margarita: A classic margarita, with its zesty lime and saltiness, pairs perfectly with the Mexican-inspired flavors of the Bell Burger.

Cerveza: A light, crisp Mexican lager will keep things super chill while complementing that taco sauce and slight spice. Look for something easy-drinking.

Spicy Bloody Mary: A Bloody Mary loaded with spices can add some serious kick to your burger meal. The tomato and spice combo works great with the beefiness, and you can top it with fun garnishes like jalapenos for extra flair.

Non-Alcoholic Pairings
Sparkling Water with Lime: A refreshing sparkling water with a squeeze of lime can add a zesty pop that balances the rich flavors of your burger.

Horchata: This sweet, creamy rice drink gives a delightful contrast to the bold flavors of the burger.

Pineapple Juice: Sweet and tropical, pineapple juice can brighten up your meal and provide a fun flavor contrast.
