Hard to think of a more American food than chicken fried steak, isn't it? These steaks are double-dipped in egg; once coated with spices and once coated in crushed corn chips for an extra crunchy outer layer.

serves/makes:

ready in:
  under 30 minutes

ingredients

oil, for frying
3 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup milk
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon granulated garlic
3 cups crushed corn chips
4 (6 ounce size) top round steaks (tenderized)

directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Heat oil in a deep skillet to 350 degrees F.

Whisk together the eggs and milk in a shallow bowl and set aside.

In another shallow bowl, combine the flour, black pepper, and garlic until well mixed.

Place the crushed corn chips in a third shallow bowl.

Dip the tenderized steak into the flour mixture to coat evenly and shake off any excess. Then dip the steak into the egg mixture to completely coat. Let the excess egg drip off.

Press the steaks into the corn chip crumbs so the crumbs adhere to both sides and are evenly coated.

Carefully place the steaks in the hot oil (in batches if needed) and cook on both sides until golden brown. Remove the chicken fried steaks from the oil with tongs, letting any excess oil drip off (you can place them on paper toweling to drain first if desired) and place on a baking sheet. Place the baking sheet in the oven for 15 minutes at 350 degrees F.

Serve the corn chip chicken fried steaks hot with cream gravy if desired.

recipe tips

Make sure the oil is hot enough before frying to prevent the steak from becoming greasy.

Use a meat mallet to tenderize the steaks evenly.

Try different seasonings in the flour mixture for variation.

Try adding a sprinkle of shredded cheese on top of the steaks before baking for an extra cheesy finish.

common recipe questions

Can I use a different type of steak for this recipe?

You can use other cuts of steak, but keep in mind that they may require more tenderizing to get the same texture.

Can I bake the corn chip chicken fried steak instead of frying it?

While frying gives the traditional crispy texture, you can bake the steaks at a higher temperature to get a similar texture without the oil.

How can I prevent the corn chips from falling off the steak during frying?

Pressing the corn chips firmly onto the steak and letting them set for a few minutes before frying can help them adhere better. Also, turn the steaks carefully when cooking.

Can I prepare the recipe in advance?

You can bread the steaks in advance and keep them in the refrigerator until ready to fry. They should only be prepared a few hours in advance, however, or the coating will get soggy.

How should I store and reheat leftovers?

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat in the oven or air fryer (at 350 degrees F).

Can I freeze the chicken fried steak?

While the texture may not be the same after freezing, you can freeze cooked corn chip chicken fried steak for up to three months for a quick meal option. Coat the steaks as directed then flash freeze. Store in an airtight container. Thaw in the fridge then cook as directed. They can also be frozen after cooking. Let cool completely then freeze.

tools needed

Deep Skillet: For frying the chicken fried steaks in hot oil.

Measuring Cups and Spoons: For measuring ingredients like milk, flour, and spices.

Shallow Bowls: Three shallow bowls are needed - one for the egg and milk mixture, a second for the flour and spices, and a third for the crushed corn chips.

Whisk: Used for thoroughly combining the eggs and milk in one of the shallow bowls.

Tongs: For handling the steaks during the dipping and frying process.

Paper Towels: For draining any excess oil from the chicken fried steaks once they are removed from the skillet, preventing them from becoming greasy.

Baking Sheet: For placing the fried steaks in the oven after frying. It allows them to remain warm and makes sure they finish cooking evenly.

Cooling Rack (optional): Placing the fried steaks on a cooling rack over a baking sheet can help keep them crispy by allowing air circulation, rather than sitting in excess oil.

Cooking Thermometer (optional): Useful if you want to measure the oil temperature, making sure it reaches and maintains 350 degrees F.

what goes with it?

Cream Gravy: A classic white gravy is a must-have with chicken fried steak.

Coleslaw: A refreshing cole slaw cuts through the richness of the fried steak.

Mashed Potatoes: Soft, buttery mashed potatoes pair perfectly with chicken fried steak.

Green Beans: Sauteed or lightly steamed green beans add a vibrant color and a crisp texture. Their mild flavor allows the chicken fried steak to take center stage while adding a little freshness to the plate.

Cornbread: A slightly sweet, moist counterpart that harmonizes with the savory notes of the chicken fried steak. Cornbread is a quintessential Southern side.

Fried Egg: Top your chicken fried steak with a sunny-side-up egg for a breakfast feast.

Hot Sauce: A sprinkle of your favorite hot sauce can bring a zesty kick that contrasts nicely with the hearty, fried steak.

beverage pairings

Wine Pairings
Chardonnay: A buttery, lightly oaked Chardonnay can be your best friend here. The creaminess of the wine will slide right alongside the richness of the chicken fried steak, while the hints of apple can add a nice fruity contrast. Just try to avoid overly oaky versions that might overpower the dinner.

Grenache: If you're looking for a red wine, a fruit-forward Grenache with its jammy berry flavors and a hint of spice can really complement the hearty flavors of the beef and the texture of the corn chips.

Pinot Grigio: For something lighter, go for a crisp, dry Pinot Grigio. Its refreshing acidity can cut through the richness, and it won't overpower the dish's tasty spices.

Other Alcohol Pairings
Pale Ale: A hoppy, citrusy pale ale can be a refreshing partner here. The bitterness from the hops will contrast nicely with the salty corn chips and the hearty steak, while its fruity tones can lift the overall flavor.

Whiskey Sour: A nice whiskey sour can add a tangy zestiness that plays well with the crunch and richness of the steak. The sweetness from the whiskey pairs with the savory flavors.

Margarita: A classic margarita, especially one with a fresh lime twist, can go alongside this dish nicely. The acidity of the lime provides a zippy counterpoint to the savory elements of your chicken fried steak, and hey, if you want to add a little salt to the rim, you do you.

Non-Alcoholic Pairings
Sparkling Water with Lime: Want some bubbles without the buzz? A refreshing sparkling water with a squeeze of lime can keep things zesty and light.

Iced Tea: A classic glass of unsweetened iced tea will help mellow out the richness of the steak without stealing the show.

Apple Cider (non-alcoholic): This isn't just for fall anymore! Chilled apple cider offers a sweet yet tart kick that pairs well with the savory notes of the dish.
