Old-Fashioned Slow Cooker Bean Soup

1 pound dry navy beans
2 quarts water
1 pound ham pieces or ham bone with meat
salt, to taste
5 whole peppercorns
OR
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 cup celery leaves, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1 bay leaf, optional
directions
Soak beans overnight.
Put all ingredients in slow cooker. Cover and cook on Low for 10 to 12 hours (or High for 5 to 6 hours. Remove ham bone. Cut meat from bone and return meat to soup. Remove bay leaf if used.
