Stir the ranch salad dressing mix, butter, and sour cream into the hot potatoes. Heat over low heat until the mixture is heated through.
Serve immediately.
The best way to prepare it in advance would be to prepare the instant potatoes as directed on the package then refrigerate in a covered container for up to 2 days. When ready to serve, transfer the mashed potatoes to a saucepan, add the remaining ingredients and heat thoroughly over low heat.
