directions
Using a hand mixer on high speed, cream together the butter, shortening, and sugar in a medium bowl for 2 minutes.
Add the egg and vanilla and continue to beat for one more minute.
In another bowl, combine the dry ingredients until mixed. With the mixer on low speed, add the dry ingredients until just combined.
Divide the dough in half and pat each half into a disk about an inch thick. Wrap each disk in plastic wrap and chill for 1 hour.
Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
When the dough is chilled, roll out each disk on wax paper to 1/8th inch thickness. Using Halloween cookie cutters, cut out the dough and place on a cookie sheet. Reroll any scraps and re-cut as needed. You can chill the dough if it gets too soft to work with.
Place the cookie sheets in the oven and bake for 10 minutes. When cookies are done, cool completely .
For the glaze: Heat all the glaze ingredients in a small pan over low heat until smooth and creamy.
Spread the glaze on each cookie and then decorate with the candies. Let the glaze set before stacking the cookies. Once set, store them in an airtight container.
