ingredients

1/4 cup hot water
1 teaspoon beef bouillon granules
2 medium onions, sliced
1 pound boneless beef round steak cut into 1x1/4-inch strips
1 green bell pepper, seeded and cut in strips
1 tablespoon butter, melted
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
4 hoagie buns, split
4 slices provolone cheese, halved

directions

Combine the water and bouillon granules. Mix to dissolve and set aside.

Combine the onions, beef, and bell pepper in the crock pot. Drizzle with the melted butter and sprinkle the garlic salt and black pepper over all. Add the dissolved bouillon.

Cover the crock pot and cook on low heat for 4-5 hours or until the beef is tender.

Heat the oven broiler. Place the hoagie buns, cut sides up, on a baking sheet. Using a slotted spoon, top each bottom bun with some of the beef and vegetable mixture. Top each bottom bun with 2 cheese halves.

Place the baking sheet under the broiler and cook until the cheese has melted. Place toasted top buns on top of the bottom buns and serve the Philly cheese steak sandwiches immediately.

crock pot notes

Crock pots/slow cookers all heat differently. There is no standard among manufacturers. Cooking times are suggested guidelines based on our testing. Please adjust cooking times and temps to work with your brand and model of slow cooker.

recipe tips

For more flavor, consider adding a splash of Worcestershire sauce or a pinch of red pepper flakes to the beef mixture.

If you prefer a softer bun, wrap the sandwiches in foil and warm them in the oven for a few minutes instead of broiling.

Depending what you consider authentic, consider using Cheez Whiz instead of provolone.

If using a leaner cut of beef, consider adding a bit more butter or a splash of olive oil to keep the meat moist.

Serve with a side of pickles, potato chips, or a simple salad to complete the meal.

Remember to slice the beef against the grain for maximum tenderness.

Always use caution when working with a hot broiler.

Customize your sandwich with additional toppings like sauteed mushrooms or hot sauce, depending on your preference.

Store any leftover beef and vegetable mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

common recipe questions

Can I use a different cut of beef for the sandwiches?

Yes, while round steak is used in this recipe, other cuts like flank steak or sirloin can also be used. Make sure the beef is thinly sliced for tenderness.

Is it possible to cook the beef mixture on high in the crock pot?

Yes, you can cook on high for about 2-3 hours. However, cooking on low for a longer period usually results in more tender meat.

Can I add other vegetables to the crock pot?

You can add sliced mushrooms or different colored bell peppers for added flavor and texture.

What can I use if I don't have beef bouillon granules?

Beef broth can be a good substitute. Use 1/4 cup of concentrated beef broth in place of the water and bouillon granules.

Can I make these sandwiches without a crock pot?

Yes, you can cook the beef and vegetables in a skillet over medium heat until the beef is tender. This method may require additional liquid and more frequent stirring.

Is there a substitute for provolone cheese?

You can use mozzarella, Swiss, or even American cheese as alternatives. Provolone is traditional, but feel free to use your favorite cheese.

How do I prevent the buns from getting soggy?

Drain the beef and vegetable mixture well with a slotted spoon before placing it on the buns. Toasting the buns can also help.

Can I prepare the beef mixture ahead of time?

Yes, you can cook the beef and vegetables in the crock pot in advance and reheat when ready to assemble the sandwiches.
