All of your favorite ingredients from a loaded baked potato made into a delicious and simple crock pot soup. This recipe quickly became one of our favorites!
Peel the potatoes and cut into half-inch cubes. Chop the onion into a medium dice. (Note: sizes of onions vary greatly so adjust the recipe accordingly to your preferences). Crush or press the garlic.
Add the potatoes, onion, broth, garlic, butter, salt and pepper to the crock pot. Stir gently. Cover, cook on low for 4 hours or until potatoes are tender.
When potatoes are tender, mash the mixture with a potato masher or a large wooden spoon until chunky but not completely mashed.
Stir in the cream, Cheddar cheese, and chopped chives, and turn the heat to high. Cook for 15 minutes longer or until heated through.
To serve, ladle soup into individual bowls and top with a dollop of sour cream, crumbled bacon, and additional shredded cheese, if desired.
What type of potatoes are best for this soup?
Russet potatoes are the best choice for this soup because they are starchy, which results in a creamy texture when cooked and mashed.
Can I use pre-packaged shredded cheese?
You can use pre-packaged shredded cheese for convenience. However, freshly grated cheese melts and blends better for a creamier texture. Pre-shredded cheese contains anti-caking agents that can make the soup grainy.
Can I make this soup without a crock pot?
You can make it on the stove. Simply combine the ingredients in a large pot, bring them to a boil, then simmer until the potatoes are tender.
What if I don't have chicken broth?
You can substitute vegetable broth for chicken broth. You can also use the equivalent of water mixed with boullion granules.
Can I add other vegetables to this soup?
You can add carrots, celery, broccoli, or even corn.
How can I make the soup thicker?
To thicken the soup, you can either mash more of the potatoes, add a cornstarch slurry (1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water), or incorporate instant potato flakes.
What can I substitute for cream?
You can use milk or a plant-based milk for a lighter version, but keep in mind the soup may be less creamy.
Is it okay to skip the bacon?
You can omit the bacon. You can replace it with a plant-based alternative if desired. You can also add smoked paprika for a smoky flavor instead.
How long can I store leftovers?
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
Can I freeze loaded baked potato soup?
Yes, this soup freezes well. Allow it to cool completely, then transfer it to a freezer-safe container. It can be stored for up to 2-3 months.
How do I reheat the soup?
If frozen, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight. Warm it gently on the stove over low heat, stirring frequently. You can also microwave it, stirring frequently until heated through.
Can I use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream?
Greek yogurt can be a healthy substitute for sour cream, providing a similar tangy flavor and creamy texture.
What if I want a spicier soup?
To add some heat, add diced jalapenos, crushed red pepper flakes, or a dash of hot sauce while cooking.

This soup was perfect on a cold rainy day! Very easy to make and taste and texture were both spot on.

A favorite go to of mine. Iâve made it in the crockpot and when pinched for time in the pressure cooker. It is such a flexible recipe and I love playing with the ingredients. For instance, shredded triple cheddar cheese instead of just plain cheddar and the store bought bacon crumbles in place of fresh bacon. This is my go to potluck entree as well and always gets rave reviews.

Itâs okay, Seemed too salty. Used low sodium broth, but it still had me chugging water! Any suggestions for next time?
Omit the salt? It wasn't too salty for us when we made it. The heavy cream and sour cream should balance it out.

Very tasty soup! My family loves it!
January 1, 2019
Delicious! Comfort food on a chilly Arizona night. I substituted Yukon gold for baking potatoes, added a cup of cream cheese, used less half-and-half and cheddar. I'm sure it's perfect just the way it is, you can't go wrong.
November 11, 2018
This dish was DELISH!! I am not a big onion fan, so next time I may only use half vs whole onion. The flavor was outstanding!! Hubby isnât big on trying new things, but he went back for seconds!! He even said he will have leftovers; he hates leftovers!!
HAVE YOU FIGURED OUT HOW MUCH THIS SOUP WOULD COST TO MAKE?
Cost will vary too much by where you live and shop for us to reliably put a price on it.

We absolutely loved this, although at least the way mine turned out, I wouldn't call it a soup, more like mashed potatoes. They're the best mashed potatoes we've had though!
February 6, 2018
Two words "ABSOLUTELY DEEELICIOUS". I made it twice in a matter of a couple weeks. The first time used recipe exactly as written. Second time I fried bacon and then added it directly into soup. FANTASTIC!!!
my family did not care for this soup
I'm sorry to hear that. It would be helpful if you said why they didn't like it. Otherwise, it's not really helpful feedback and as per our review guidelines has to be changed to a "comment", not a recipe review.
October 28, 2017
This has become one of my families favorite soups. We love it and so does anyone else I share it with. I usually cook it in my pressure cooker which is much faster when I need it quick.
I love baked potato soup and cannot wait to try this recipe over the weekend! I was just wondering on how to save it? Can you freeze, if so how long?
You should be able to freeze it without the toppings. The texture might change a bit upon reheating.
February 7, 2017
Very good, will make this often.
November 19, 2016
Excellent recipe! I love the flavor! This is the 1st time using chicken broth in my soup and it turned out great. It's impossible to mess this soup up!
September 7, 2016
I was a little sceptical with this recipe as most of what I make in a crock pot turns out to be lacking flavor. I was astonishingly surprised! This is soooo good! My daughter isn't a fan of potatoes but devoured it and is still raving about it the next day. I ended up cooking an entire package of bacon and adding it to the soup. (Wouldn't want to waste any bacon, would we?) My husband loved it! It was better than he had anticipated! He said it tastes like store bought. This is our new favorite soup, soooo dang DELICIOUS!
April 18, 2016
This was delicious.
January 24, 2016
Deliciousness! This was the first time that I tried this recipe and used less garlic and grated my onion. I also used the sour cream which was noted as optional.
December 28, 2015
Super good!!! I highly recommend this recipe to anyone who likes soup. I added some turkey, I suppose you could add your favorite meat to flavor it up...
December 14, 2015
This recipe is a big hit for my family and friends.
November 8, 2015
Soup came out ok, but not anything I would rave about. I was expecting it to be thicker. I found it to be lacking in flavor.
October 21, 2015
I ended up using an entire 5 lb. bag of small russe potatoes. My soup was a little thin so instead of mashing against the crock I removed 2.5 cups of the potatoes and added them with the sour cream, half and half and cheddar and blended till smooth with my stand mixer then stirrred it back into the soup. I also did not add any salt considering how much salt chicken broth and cured bacom already contain. Great soup! Now I just need to find a hungry army :D

This one gets raves from all. I have served this at Super Bowl parties as well as a cold weekend comfort meal and everyones loves it. Thanks.
December 8, 2014
I absolutely love this soup! It's my go-to recipe and everyone loves it. I use onion powder and garlic powder in place of actual veggies and I love how creamy it is! Love to stir in sour cream right into the soup to give it a delightful tang. Just wonderful.
November 10, 2014
Really loved this soup. Cooked on low for 5 hours and it was done though.
October 24, 2014
This ended up being one of the best soups I've ever made!
October 5, 2014
My fiance and I absolutely LOVED this soup! It is perfect for a cold winter day and was very filling. I just made a couple modifications to it. I used 6 large red potatoes (Yes they take forever to cut up 6 of them, but totally worth it!!), corn and finely chopped carrots, and just kind of estimated by adding a little more until it looked like enough in the soup. I also added sour cream (probably about 1/4 to 2/3 a cup, just estimated here too) when I added the half & half, and a half cup of extra sharp cheddar cheese. Then I let it cook on high for about another hour to make sure it was a nice and somewhat thick consistency. I also used less onion based on the reviews people had written, and I think the flavor turned out great! My fiance kept commenting about how he was so excited to have leftovers for tomorrow, this is definitely going down in the "favorites" recipe book!!
September 23, 2014
It is very delicious, but just a little too salty. I would recommend one and a half teaspoons of salt instaed of two and a half.
September 15, 2014
By far the best potato soup I've ever made. I found this recipe last winter, and it quickly became a regular menu item in our house. My kids are huge fans!
September 14, 2014
This is such an easy but delicious soup! We absolutely loved it and will definitely make it again. Thank you for this recipe!
August 22, 2014
Couldn't believe how addicting this soup was. I expected to have leftovers because I made a full recipe but three of us inhaled it all and didn't touch the rest of our food!
July 29, 2014
So easy, family loved it. Big hit!
April 13, 2014
This was the best soup I have ever made!!! It was very easy also. I only used half an onion and 1 clove of garlic; it was perfect for us this way. I will definitely make this soup often!!
February 25, 2014
This was a really good recipe. I did cut down on the potatoes from 6 to 4. I also cut down on the onion to half and the garlic cloves to two. I also added a little bit of the bacon grease and some Frank's Hot Sauce and it gave it a nice little kick.
February 16, 2014
hands down the best potato soup i've ever had! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe! It's a new favorite here with us! I made it exactly as written and we loved it. It is a bit garlicky but we liked that a LOT!
February 12, 2014
This soup is incredible! I did use a small onion, not large (large is kinda relative so an actual measurement would be helpful). I did use three cloves of garlic but again that is one of those measurements that's not helpful. I used three small cloves and it was delicious. It's a rich soup so as much as I'd love to eat this every day, I'll have to save it as a treat. Although we're about to be snowed in so I'll probably make it as comfort food again!! Thank you for the recipe!
February 1, 2014
Way too much garlic...overpowering...next time no garlic and small onion. Loved the consistency of the soup though.
January 26, 2014
Making this soup for the third time - it's outstanding!!!
January 25, 2014
Amazing recipe!! OMG! We ate every drop. I only used a small onion (would be nice if it gave measurement in cups instead of just size) and it worked out great. Everyone in my family loved this recipe and that's rare. Best potato soup I think I've ever had! Thank you for sharing this recipe, it's going in my permanent rotation this winter!
January 25, 2014
The garlic and onion was overpowering. Too much! Won't be making this one again
January 11, 2014
The idea of this soup is good, but it is way, WAY too salty. Also, I only added about half the onion suggested (if that), and the flavor was pretty overpowering. All in all, not bad, but I probably won't use this recipe again.
January 10, 2014
Heaven in a bowl! This is by far the best potato soup I've ever had.
does anyone know how many calories are in one serving??
The calorie and nutritional breakdown per serving is listed in the "nutrition" section of the recipe (under the "more recipes like this" section above)
January 5, 2014
It was pretty good, but next time I'm only putting a very small onion in it. Otherwise it was great.
December 26, 2013
Love this potato soup recipe. Easy and taste delicious.
December 21, 2013
This is our favorite soup
December 12, 2013
What a great soup! I love how simple the recipe is too. VERY filling though so keep that in mind if you are serving other food with it.
December 11, 2013
This is the best potato soup ever!!! I have made this for many family members and parties and it is always a hit. I put all ingredients, including cheese, sour cream, and bacon before serving. If you want the soup thicker boil a few potatoes and mash to use as a thickner.
December 7, 2013
I made this tonight and everyone loved it! I used dehydrated garlic, half an onion and chicken stock. Has a nice consistency, it's thick and creamy with flavor. Our guests commented that you don't even have to put salt on it, has lots of flavor. The bacon makes it! Baked it to crispy and crumbled on top with cheese and sour cream. Did not use the chives, was oniony enough already.
Sounds good, but WAY, WAY, WAY to much salt!! That's a full day's worth in one serving. Will try it with 1/3 the salt.
November 21, 2013
Well, all the other reviews about how awesome this soup recipe is aren't wrong! It's incredible, actually. Quite possibly the best potato soup I've ever had (and I've tried a lot!) The crock pot gets the potatoes very tender and it has great flavor. Rich and filling. I loved everything about it!
November 15, 2013
This is my first time making any potato soup. It is super easy and super delicious. I am making it for my parents tomorrow. This soup is seriously flawless :-)
November 12, 2013
This soup was delicious! I made it exactly as written except used 1/2 cheddar and 1/2 cheddar Jack cheese because that's all I had. The consistency was perfect. A great recipe to have waiting ready to eat on a cold raw day.
November 8, 2013
Chose this for my first time making loaded baked potato soup. Turned out DELICIOUS and I will definitely be adding this recipe to my stash. I about one and a half batches (had a bunch of small potatoes that needed to be used up). I chopped the bacon and cooked it with the potatoes the whole time, and I left the skin on the potatoes. Only thing I HAD to change was that I added some flour to thicken it up. Yum yum, FIVE STARS!
November 4, 2013
This is the most used recipe in my crock pot! The kids request it almost weekly now. We love it! I've tried a few variations on this recipe (adding in veggies, other seasonings, etc) but this is my favorite version.
October 16, 2013
I've made this a dozen times now and every time it turns out great. Very delicious!
October 8, 2013
This soup is serious comfort food. I was having a bad week so I put this in the crock this morning knowing I wouldn't feel like cooking tonight and came home to the most wonderful soup. Instantly put me in a good mood again. Delicious!
October 6, 2013
Made this today. My kids couldn't get enough. I liked that the ingredients were simple. I will definitely make this again and again. Thank you.
September 22, 2013
Really great! Added broccoli to the soup. Worked out nicely.
September 16, 2013
Very good soup. I used my fat-free half and half. I didn't have onion or fresh chives or garlic cloves. I substituted using 1 1/2 TBL onion powder, 3 tsp dried chives, and 1 1/2 tsp of minced garlic. I found the substitution amounts on the internet. I also used bacon bits. All good. A little quicker since I had less chopping. I will only use a little less pepper since we aren't big on pepper. Will definitely make again.
August 31, 2013
Great and easy soup to make! However, it was a little runny so I added about 1/4 a cup of flour and it was perfect!!!! Highly recommend!
July 25, 2013
I love the loaded potato soup you can get at some restaurants but I had never made it at home. Tried this recipe yesterday and my super picky husband who claims he doesn't like potato soups loved it and ate seconds. I'm not sure what sets it apart from other recipes other than maybe the long cooking time in the crock pot either improves the texture or flavor but he loved it and we now have a new favorite soup recipe to make!
July 20, 2013
This soup was delicious. I actually converted it to a stove top recipe and it turned out fantastic! My picky sister absolutely loved it. I am making it for the second time this week tonight! This is a fantastic recipe for summer or winter and it is sure to satisfy everyone. Note: I did sub. heavy cream with a mixture of greek yogurt and milk, and also I did not have any chives or onions, but it still turned out great! Two thumbs up.
April 14, 2013
This is so fantastically simple to make. I did adjust the seasonings to my personal preference and sauteed the onion before adding. I also added dried chives to the broth and the sour cream to the soup about an hour before serving. Oh yes, it also got a dollop of it on top in my bowl. But I love me some sour cream. This was de-freaking-licious! I wrote this review and gave it 5 stars because it was a great soup base recipe. But then again, I never follow recipes exactly. I have really picky eaters in my house.
March 8, 2013
We are in the throes of a kitchen remodel, meaning I have no stove or oven. So I am trying desperately to find good crock pot recipes because my husband and I are dying for a home cooked meal! I had a bunch of potatos and onion to use up so I decided to make potato soup. The day is cold and rainy, so perfect soup weather. I followed the recipe exactly and it came out perfect! Great taste and easy to make. My husband loved it, too. Makes a lot of soup so we will have leftovers for awhile! Which is great because that means all I have to do is heat this up in the microwave and dinner or lunch, is served!
March 7, 2013
I cannot find the words to tell you how good this was! The soup had the perfect seasoning, consistency, and texture. My kids LOVED it. So easy to make and its tastes better than any restaurant soup I've ever had. Thank you so much!!!!!
January 31, 2013
I'm currently stuffing my face with the soup that I just made...it's awesome! Very simple recipe but SO GOOD! I will definitely be making this all the time in the future.
January 31, 2013
I never made loaded potato soup before because I can not tolerate creamy soups. But it is my neighbor's favorite. She loved it and so did my husband. My husband is a very fussy eater. It was a great recipe without making any changes. I will probably make it again before the winter ends.
January 30, 2013
I made this for a potluck at work and it was a hit. The only changes I made were I used Lipton Onion Soup mix in place of the onion and cut the salt to half what it had suggested. I also mixed in the sour cream with about an hour to go. (all suggestions from other reviewers) The only thing I might change next time is omitting the extra salt completely. With the extra salt from the soup mix, it was just a little too salty for my preference but overall it was fabulous.
January 28, 2013
Made this soup with A LOT less salt. The 2 1/2 tsp. called for scared me a bit, so I backed off a bit. It was perfect. My kids love it almost as much as my stovetop baked potato soup. Did anyone make the soup exactly as the recipe states? Was the 2 1/2 tsp salt too much or just right?
November 17, 2012
I wish I could give it 4.5. The only change I made from the recipe was to use a bag of hashed browns (I used the Ore Ida 32 oz bag) instead of peeling and chopping potatoes. Texture turned out almost perfect. I wish I would have had maybe one more potato in it, but it was fine. My main gripe: I love onion, but a WHOLE chopped onion was just way too much. I wish I would have halved it. It was more like an onion and baked potato soup. But it was still tasty, and what a great starting recipe. I added the half-and-half and the sour cream at hour 4 (on high) and let it cook another 30 minutes. Turned out delicious (if a bit onion-y) and I would definitely make it again (with half as much onion).
November 15, 2012
This recipe was fantastic prepared just the way it way presented. For the life of me, I do not understand why people alter a recipe then rate it. It is not a true rating of the recipe if you go changing everything with an "I did this..." Again, delicious just the way it was written.
November 9, 2012
This recipe TASTE GREAT!! Followed the recipe except i add about 1/4 cup of sour cream alond with the 1 cup of half and half.
November 8, 2012
This took FOREVER...maybe too many potatoes. When it all came together, it was SO worth the effort. I ate two bowls, before the potatoes were cooked. The "I'm not hungry," person in the house, LOVED it. Will definitely make it, earlier, again. FIVE STARS.
October 31, 2012
I made this soup for a pot luck and it was a hit! Several people asked for the recipe. I did make a few modifications that I learned from other reviewers. I added the sour cream during the cooking and substituted Lipton onion soup in the place of the onion because I didn't want to cut up onions in the morning :-) I highly recommend this soup for anyone who loves baked potato soup!
October 7, 2012
Can't. Stop. Eating! THis is the best!
This has always been my fav, want to add a even better touch add Famous Daves seasoning to the whole pot just a few dashes and Wow!...
Am making this delicious potato soup for a crowd. Made it last week and my grand kids and husband loved. Does anyone know how long it will keep in the refrigerator. I kept it for 5 days and it was still very good. I would like to make it today to be eaten next week.
February 21, 2012
I tried the soup and it was good. I read all the reviews first and adjusted the salt and garlic. I sub the potatoes for hash browns and it was good...I used a half bag and should have used the whole bag. I used green onion instead of chives....next time I will use the chives and a whole bag of hash browns. I will make it again.
To thicken this potato soup just add a tablespoon or more of instant potatoes. Works great
This receipe was NOT good! I was shocked when I read it wanted a large onion but I just followed as instructed and yuck! tasted like french onion soup and was just not good at all. It might have potential with 1/4 cup of onions but I should have followed my instincts so shame on me. Good luck.
October 27, 2011
Made this soup to celebrate the first snow of the season and it was delicious!! I let the onions sweat over low heat before throwing them in and added celery as well. I substituted the sour cream and the cream/half & half for 0% Greek Yogurt to save some calories and it was delicious!! It gave the soup a nice tangy flavor and made it very creamy! I also added the bacon, yogurt (or sour cream and 1/2 & 1/2), and cheddar about an hour before serving. Grated in some fresh nutmeg at the end and it was perfect! Thanks for the recipe, this potato soup recipe is our favorite so far!
October 26, 2011
We subbed the potatoes for frozen hashbrowns, eliminated onions because of preferences and used the sour cream. I love that it was ready quickly and we even had guests over to enjoy.
October 23, 2011
This recipe is very good! I made a few changes based on other user comments, such as adding the sour cream right to the soup, and I also added the bacon pieces right into the soup instead of as a garnish. The only thing I did not like was the texture of the soup, as I found it to be TOO soupy, so I simply added two more potatoes that I quickly boiled before, and I was happy!
October 22, 2011
This soup is excellent! My daughters both loved it and I made it again recently for the picky eater one! We make bread in our breadmaker to enjoy with this one. Can't wait for a cold winters day to make it again, since its the kind of soup to enjoy on one of those days!
October 20, 2011
Fantastic! I used vegetable broth instead and added a little celery for flavor. It's my favorite recipe ever! I added the sour cream to the whole pot while cooking and used cream to thicken it. Thank you for sharing this!!!!!
September 6, 2011
Soo good but i would back off on the garlic a teaspoon or so its a lil powerful! But yum what a good recipe!
March 30, 2011
Easy and very delicious! I saved this one in my recipe book! I used all green onions instead of yellow or white and cut the number of potatoes in half (still plenty). I also added the half and half, cheese and sour cream about an hour before we ate it. Love it! Even my picky 13 year-old loved it!
March 28, 2011
Wow! Great recipe and very easy to make! My kind of recipe. Very tasty, and like the restaurant varieties. Could be a bit thicker. I sauteed the onions first as one reviewer suggested and added the sour cream to the whole pot of soup. Might use a little less salt next time, but overall...its a KEEPER!
My toddlers love potato soup at restaurants, and I was hoping this would be one of their favorites! However, the soup has too much garlic, onion and salt! It left a bad aftertaste, and they definitely hated it! My husband didn't mind it that much, but thought it had too much salt. A teaspoon is way too much!
January 12, 2011
This recipe is phenomenal! Made it yesterday; there was some leftover--cannot wait to enjoy a bowl today!
December 22, 2010
Very tasty and adaptable. I think next time I'll add some broccoli. I do have one suggestion: saute the onions prior to cooking with the potatoes. We had one batch go down the drain after following the recipe. The raw onions created a very funky flavor in that first batch. I'm an onion lover but something didn't work the first time.
December 22, 2010
I tried this recipe last weekend and it was DELICIOUS! Next time I will try the suggestion of adding the sour cream while cooking. Adding after I dished it out was yummy!!
December 15, 2010
Absolutely delicious! AND super easy! Like some mentioned above I added the whole cup of sour cream to the entire soup rather than just on top. I absolutely hate sour cream, but to my delight I couldn't even taste it and it made the soup richer. I will definitely be making this again very soon!
November 21, 2010
This soup was awesome! It tastes just like my favorite loaded baked potato soup that I order at a local restaurant. I used green onions instead of chives and it was delicious! I made it to serve 4 people and it was enough for an average size bowl for 3 people so keep that in mind if you are making it for larger families.
November 17, 2010
My family loves this so much, I make it for dinner at least once a week!
February 18, 2010
The suggestions listed above were great. I made my potatoes a little larger and smashed them with a large spoon. So I still had some large chunks. I also added the sour cream to the whole pot. This soup is great enjoy!!
February 4, 2010
I made this, but like one of the other reviews I added sour cream to the whole mix and left the potaoes solid and did not mash. It was FANTASTIC!!!! We put the lrft overs away and the next night I fixed meatloaf, the family begged for the soup on the side instead of mashed potatoes! Even better the second night!!!
November 21, 2009
Very very tasty. I added three different flavors of cheese, and it is very good. Everyone loved it! Must try :)
November 18, 2009
AWESOME! I used turkey bacon and added it to the potatoes before cooking them. I also added dried chives and some basil to the potato mix. I opted not to use the sour cream. It was delicious! my roommates loved it. Thanks for the recipe!
October 31, 2009
I made this last sunday for my family, they loved it. I didn't have any bacon fried up so I used bacon bits instead, just as good! I didn't measure exactly but sure came out good, took the rest to work and the guys gobbled it up. True comfort food - easy and wonderful!
October 28, 2009
The only thing I did different was to add the cup of sour cream to the whole of the soup, not just on each bowl. That thickened it enough that next time I won't lightly mash the potatoes. It is delicious and simple either way.
