ingredients

2 tablespoons instant coffee granules
1 1/2 cup water
4 cups low-fat milk
2 packages (3.9 ounce size) instant devil's food chocolate pudding mix
1 package (8 ounce size) light cream cheese at room temperature
24 ladyfingers
8 ounces semisweet mini chocolate chips
1 carton (12 ounce size) reduced-fat, nondairy whipped topping, such as Cool Whip
1/2 teaspoon cocoa powder for garnish

directions

Pour the coffee granules into a glass measure with the water. Microwave, uncovered, on high 1 minute. Let the coffee stand in the microwave while proceeding with the recipe.

Place the milk, pudding mix and cream cheese in the large bowl of an electric mixer. Mix on medium speed until well blended. Set aside.

Split the ladyfingers in half lengthwise. Place half of a package, cut side up, in the bottom of a trifle bowl or glass bowl with a 16-cup capacity.

Drizzle one-fourth of the coffee mixture evenly over the ladyfingers. Spread about one-fourth of the pudding mixture over the ladyfingers. Spread one-fourth of the whipped topping over the pudding. Sprinkle one-fourth cup of the chocolate chips over the topping.

Repeat these layers 3 more times, ending with whipped topping. Sprinkle the cocoa evenly over the whipped topping to garnish. Cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate at least 6 hours (or up to 24 hours) to let the flavor develop. Serve in dessert bowls.

cook's notes

If you're serving adults only, you can substitute one-half cup of coffee liqueur, such as Kahlua, for one-half cup of the instant coffee. Mix it with the coffee before drizzling the coffee mixture over the ladyfingers.

  1. CallMeSandi REVIEW:

I couldn't find devils food chocolate pudding mix so I used dark chocolate. This is delicious and a very pretty trifle dessert. I used part kahlua as suggested. Served it with kahlua whipped cream on top (just whip cream and add kahlua and sugar to taste).
