The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.

ingredients
1/2 cup shortening (bacon grease can be substituted)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon spices (your choice: cloves, mace, ginger)
1 cup chopped raisins (or other dried fruits such as prunes or figs)
1 cup sugar, brown or white
1 cup water
2 cups flour, white or whole wheat
1/4 teaspoon soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
directions
Boil sugar, shortening, raisins, dates, salt and spices for 3 minutes.
Remove from heat and let cool. When cool, add flour, baking soda and baking powder that have been sifted together; beat well. Pour into a greased 9x5 inch loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees F for 45 minutes.

Where's the water enter!! What salt!! Not an ingredient. Difficult to remove from pan. Tasty, so I'll take it to my culinary history group -- 'good food for bad times/'
1942 WAR CAKE or what i remeber calling it just war cake was made by my grandmother her recipe was a little differnt but very colse in the ingreadents. I love this treat and its not that hard to make
