A little salmon turns a package of Caesar salad mix into a gourmet affair.

serves/makes:

ready in:
  under 30 minutes

ingredients

1 package (10 ounce size) fresh Caesar salad mix (includes lettuce, dressing, croutons, and cheese)
3 ounces thinly sliced, smoked salmon (lox-style), cut into bite-size strips
OR
4 ounces grilled or canned salmon, skinned, boned, and broken into chunks

directions

Empty the salad from the package into a large serving bowl. Toss the dressing with the salad until it is well coated in the dressing.

Add the salmon, croutons and cheese. Toss gently and serve the salmon caesar salad immediately.

recipe tips

If using canned salmon, make sure to drain it well to prevent the salad from becoming watery.

For an extra flavor boost, consider adding a squeeze of lemon juice or some freshly cracked black pepper.

To enhance the flavor of the salad, sprinkle some freshly grated Parmesan cheese on top before serving.

Try adding different herbs or spices to the salad for a unique twist, such as chopped fresh dill or a sprinkle of red pepper flakes.

To make the salad heartier, serve it with a side of garlic bread or focaccia.

common recipe questions

What type of salmon is best for this recipe?

You can use either smoked salmon (lox-style) or grilled/canned salmon. Both will work, but they offer different flavors and textures.

Can I use a homemade Caesar salad mix instead of a package?

You can make your own mix of romaine lettuce, Caesar dressing, croutons, and Parmesan cheese.

Is there a substitute for Caesar dressing?

You can use Ranch or a simple vinaigrette, but it will change the traditional Caesar salad flavor.

What other types of cheese can I use?

While Parmesan is traditional for Caesar salad, you could use Pecorino Romano or Asiago for a different twist.

Do I need to cook the smoked salmon?

No, smoked salmon is ready to eat as is.

How do I grill the salmon if I choose that option?

Grill the salmon over medium-high heat for about 4 minutes per side or until it flakes easily.

Can I add other vegetables to the salad?

Yes, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, or avocado slices would all be good additions.

Should the salad be chilled before serving?

It's not necessary, but you can chill the ingredients beforehand if you prefer a colder salad.

Can I prepare this salad in advance?

It's best to prepare this salad just before serving to keep the lettuce and croutons crisp.

How long will the salad keep in the fridge?

It's best to eat the salad immediately. If you must store it, keep it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a day, but note that the lettuce and croutons may become soggy.

Can I freeze the salad?

Freezing is not recommended as the lettuce and other fresh ingredients will lose their texture.

tools needed

Large Serving Bowl: To toss the salad and make sure all ingredients are well mixed and evenly coated in dressing.

Sharp Knife: To cut the smoked salmon into bite-size strips or to break grilled or canned salmon into chunks.

Salad Tongs or Fork: For tossing and serving the salad, so all components are well mixed.

what goes with it?

Crispy Parmesan Garlic Breadsticks: These cheesy, garlicky breadsticks will add a crunch to your salad, while the parmesan flavor will perfectly complement the Caesar dressing.

Champagne Panna Cotta with Berry Compote: End your meal on a sweet note with this light and creamy dessert. The fruity berry compote will provide a nice contrast to the savory flavors of the salad.

Aged Balsamic Glaze: drizzle this sweet and tangy glaze over the salmon Caesar salad for an extra burst of flavor. The acidity will cut through the richness of the salmon and dressing.

Roasted Garlic Crostini: serve these crunchy crostini on the side for a textural contrast to the salad.

Savory Parmesan Crisps: sprinkle these crunchy Parmesan crisps on top of the salad for a cheesy, salty kick.

Chilled Chardonnay: pair this light, crisp white wine with the salad for a refreshing contrast to the salmon and Caesar dressing. The citrus notes will complement the flavors in the dish.

Zesty Lemon Wedges: squeeze fresh lemon over the salad to brighten up the flavors and add a pop of acidity.
