Ah, the unassuming envelope of onion soup mix. It's more than just for onion soup (or dip). It adds tremendous flavor (and convenience) in all these recipes.
Grape Juice Layer Cake

Cake
1 package (18.5 ounce size) white cake mix
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
Filling
1/2 cup Concord grape juice
1/2 cup water
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sugar
4 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon butter or margarine
Frosting
1 egg white
3/4 cup sugar
3 tablespoons Concord grape juice
1/2 teaspoon light corn syrup
directions
Prepare cake mix according to package directions, adding almond flavoring and lemon peel. Bake in 2 greased and floured 9-inch round cake pans; cool.
For Filling: In the top of a double boiler, combine Concord grape juice, water, cornstarch, salt and sugar. Cook over direct heat until thickened, stirring constantly.
Place over boiling water and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add lemon juice and butter; blend. Cool. Spread between layers of cake.
For Frosting: Combine egg white, sugar, Concord grape juice and corn syrup in top of double boiler. Beat at high speed 1 minute with electric mixer.
Place over boiling water; be certain that water does not touch bottom of pan. Beat at high speed for 7 minutes until frosting holds stiff peaks. Pour into large bowl and beat 1 minute longer. Frost cake.
