crock pot notes
Crock pots/slow cookers all heat differently. There is no standard among manufacturers. Cooking times are suggested guidelines based on our testing. Please adjust cooking times and temps to work with your brand and model of slow cooker.recipe tips
For more flavor, add spices like smoked paprika or hot sauce to the soup mixture.
Try using a mix of cheeses for a richer flavor.
Try different meats such as bacon or ground beef for variety.
For a quicker version, use frozen diced potatoes that are thawed. Cook time should be about 2-3 hours.
Always taste and adjust salt and pepper before serving, as sausage can be salty.
A sprinkle of fresh herbs like parsley or chives before serving can add color.
Make sure to slice the potatoes evenly for uniform cooking.
common recipe questions
What type of potatoes work best for this casserole?
Waxy potatoes like red or yellow potatoes hold their shape better during cooking, while starchy potatoes like Russets are great for a fluffier texture. Both can work, but choose based on your texture preference.
Can I use fresh sausage instead of smoked sausage?
You can use fresh sausage, but it will change the flavor. Make sure to cook it through before layering it in the casserole. You can also use cooked bulk sausage in place of links.
Can I substitute another type of cheese?
You can use any cheese that melts well, such as Monterey Jack, mozzarella, or Gouda. Keep in mind that this may alter the overall flavor of the dish.
What if I don't have cream of mushroom soup?
You can make a homemade version by combining equal parts of heavy cream or sour cream with some sauteed mushrooms and seasonings like garlic and onion powder, or you could use another type of cream soup like cream of chicken.
How do I know when the casserole is done cooking?
The casserole is done when the potatoes are tender and easily pierced with a fork, and the sausage is heated through.
Can I add vegetables to this casserole?
You can include vegetables such as bell peppers, onions, or broccoli. You may want to partially cook them before adding them.
How can I store leftovers?
Cool the casserole completely before transferring it to an airtight container. It can be stored in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
Can this casserole be frozen?
You can freeze the casserole after cooking for up to 2-3 months. Wrap it well to prevent freezer burn.
How do I reheat leftover casserole?
Reheat in the oven at 350 degrees F until the casserole is heated through, or microwave in individual portions. Cover with foil if using the oven to prevent drying out.

Didn't know what the recipe meant by smoky links so I just used regular sausage links that I sliced up. It got a little greasy but it was delcious. Would use different sausage (less greasy) when I make it again.
