ingredients
2 medium tomatoes
1/2 cup all-purpose flour, PLUS"PLUS" means this ingredient in addition to the one on the next line, often with divided uses
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 egg, beaten
1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup gruyere cheese
oil, for deep frying
directions
Bring a large saucepan of water to boil. Plunge the tomatoes in the water, and hold them there for about 1 minute.
Remove the tomatoes from the water and hold them under cold running water to remove the skins. Cut the tomatoes horizontally, and remove the seeds. Coarsely chop the tomatoes.
In a mixing bowl combine the flour, sugar, and baking powder. Add the beaten egg, tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, and cheese, stirring to coat the tomatoes.
Shape the mixture into patties or balls, and deep fry in hot oil for about 30 seconds on each side or until golden. Drain on paper towels.
