serves/makes:

ready in:
  1-2 hrs

ingredients

16 ounces sour cream
2 cans (6 ounce size) minced clams, drained
1 package (1.5 ounce size) dry onion soup mix
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 1/2 teaspoons prepared horseradish

directions

Combine the sour cream, drained clams, onion soup mix, lemon juice, and horseradish in a bowl. Mix well. Cover the bowl and chill for 1-2 hours.

Stir well before serving. Serve with potato chips or vegetable dippers.

recipe tips

Adjust the flavor of the dip by adding more lemon juice or horseradish to taste.

Garnish the dip with chopped parsley or chives before serving.

To make the dip healthier, use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream for a higher protein content or fat-free or low-fat sour cream to save on fat calories.

Add a sprinkle of paprika or Old Bay seasoning on top for a dash of color and extra flavor.

If you prefer a milder onion flavor, you can use half of the onion soup mix packet and adjust to taste.

To make the dip more indulgent, mix in a handful of shredded cheese before chilling.

common recipe questions

Is prepared horseradish the same as horseradish sauce?

Prepared horseradish is primarily just grated horseradish root mixed with vinegar and salt. Horseradish sauce is grated horseradish mixed with a creamy base (like mayonnaise). Prepared horseradish has a much more pungent flavor.

Can I use horseradish sauce instead of prepared horseradish?

You can but it won't pack the same flavor punch unless you use significantly more (you could substitute some of the sour cream with horseradish sauce to balance out the ratios).

Can I use fresh clams instead of canned clams?

You can use fresh clams but they will need to be cooked, shelled, and chopped before adding them to the dip.

How long can I store the dip in the refrigerator?

The dip can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.

Can I freeze the dip?

It is not recommended to freeze this dip as the texture of the sour cream will change when thawed.

How can I make this dip spicier?

To make the dip spicier, you can increase the amount of horseradish or add a sprinkle of cayenne pepper or hot sauce.

What can I do if the dip is too thick?

If the dip is too thick, you can stir in a bit of milk or buttermilk to thin it out.

Can I use a different kind of soup mix?

Onion is classic with clams but you could use a vegetable soup/dip mix instead (such as Knorr brand).

tools needed

Mixing Bowl: A medium to large mixing bowl is necessary for combining the sour cream, minced clams, onion soup mix, lemon juice, and horseradish.

Measuring Spoons: For measuring the lemon juice and prepared horseradish.

Spatula or Wooden Spoon: A spatula or a wooden spoon will help in thoroughly mixing the ingredients together.

Plastic Wrap or Lid: To cover the mixing bowl while the dip chills in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours.

what goes with it?

Potato Chips: Potato chips are a classic combo, providing a satisfying salty contrast to the creamy clam dip.

Vegetable Dippers: Crisp veggies like celery, carrots, and bell peppers add freshness and a healthy touch.

Pita Chips: These have a unique, toasty flavor that complements the savory notes of the dip, and their sturdiness makes them perfect for scooping.

Crackers: A variety of crackers - especially those with seeds or herbs - can add interesting textures and flavors to the snacking experience.

Toasted Baguette Slices: The warm, crunchy exterior of toasted baguette slices adds a nice contrast to the dip.

Bagel Chips: Another sturdy dipper that is perfect for this dip. Go for "everything bagel" chips for the most flavor.
