American Cafe's House Dressing - CDKitchen.com

serves/makes:

ready in:
  30-60 minutes

ingredients

1 1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup buttermilk, plus more if needed
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon garlic salt
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup finely grated carrots
1/2 cup minced fresh parsley

directions

Whisk together the mayonnaise, buttermilk, onion powder, garlic powder, garlic salt, salt, carrots, and parsley in a bowl, thinning the dressing as needed with additional buttermilk.

Cover the bowl and chill the house dressing until ready to serve (or at least 30 minutes).

recipe tips

If the dressing thickens too much after chilling, stir in a little buttermilk before serving.

Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary before serving, as chilling can dull the flavors slightly.

common recipe questions

Can I use a mayonnaise substitute?

Yes, you can use low-fat or vegan mayonnaise if you prefer. Miracle Whip will also work but the flavor will be different.

What if I don't have buttermilk?

You can make a substitute by adding a tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice to a cup of milk and letting it sit for 5 minutes.

Can I use fresh onion and garlic instead of powders?

Yes, but make sure they are finely minced to avoid a chunky texture. Use 1 tablespoon of minced onion and 1 minced garlic clove as a starting point.

Is garlic salt necessary if I'm already using garlic powder and salt?

Garlic salt adds a distinct flavor, but you can increase garlic powder and salt slightly if you don't have it.

How do I adjust the thickness of the dressing?

Gradually add more buttermilk until you reach the desired consistency.

Can I use a food processor to mix the dressing?

Yes, a food processor can make a smoother blend, especially if using fresh garlic and onion.

How long should I chill the dressing before serving?

At least 30 minutes, but the flavors will meld better if chilled for 1-2 hours.

What salads go well with this dressing?

It pairs well with mixed greens, vegetable salads, or as a dip for raw veggies.

How long can I store this dressing?

In an airtight container, it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Can I freeze the house dressing?

Freezing mayonnaise-based dressings is not recommended as it can separate when thawed.

What if I want a lower-fat version?

You can use low-fat mayonnaise and buttermilk to reduce the fat content.
