ingredients

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 clove garlic, peeled
4 loin lamb chops
1/2 cup sour cream
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon paprika

directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly to flavor the oil. Add the lamb chops, turning to brown on both sides.

Remove the chops to a shallow baking dish. Discard the garlic.

Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir the sour cream, vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce into the oil remaining in the skillet. Mix well then add the salt, black pepper, and paprika. Pour the sour cream sauce over the lamb chops in the baking dish.

Place the baking dish, uncovered, in the oven and bake at 350 degrees F for 40 minutes or until the lamb is tender and cooked through.

Serve the lamb chops hot.

recipe tips

Let the lamb chops rest for a few minutes before serving to allow the juices to redistribute and keep the meat tender.

For added flavor, add some fresh herbs such as rosemary or thyme to the sour cream sauce before baking.

If you prefer a thicker sauce, you can mix in a tablespoon of flour or cornstarch with the sour cream mixture before adding it to the lamb chops.

If you prefer a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili flakes to the sour cream sauce.

common recipe questions

What type of lamb chops should I use for this recipe?

Loin lamb chops work best for this baked lamb chops recipe. You can use other cuts of lamb or even pork chops, just adjust the cooking time as needed.

Why should I brown the lamb chops before baking?

Browning the lamb chops not only adds flavor but also helps to seal in the juices, keeping the meat moist during baking.

Can I use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream?

Yes, Greek yogurt can be used as a substitute for sour cream in this recipe.

Why should I discard the garlic after cooking?

The garlic is used for flavoring the oil in the skillet; discarding it prevents any burnt garlic bits from affecting the final taste of the dish.

How can I tell if the lamb chops are done cooking?

The lamb chops should reach an internal temperature of 145 degrees F.

Can I marinate the lamb chops before baking?

Marinating the lamb chops before cooking can boost their flavor. Consider using a mixture of olive oil, garlic, and herbs. Pat the lamb chops dry after removing from the marinade.

How do I store and reheat leftovers?

Store leftovers in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in the oven or microwave.

Can I freeze leftovers?

Leftovers won't freeze well because of the sour cream sauce.

tools needed

Large Skillet: For browning the lamb chops before transferring them to the baking dish to be baked in the delicious sauce. Make sure the skillet is large enough to comfortably fit all the chops without overcrowding.

Shallow Baking Dish: For holding the lamb chops as they bake in the flavorful sour cream and Worcestershire sauce mixture. The shallow dish helps with even cooking and allows the chops to soak up all the delicious flavors.

Meat Thermometer: For checking the internal temperature of the lamb chops to make sure they are cooked properly. This will help you avoid overcooking (and undercooking!) and keep the chops moist and tender.

Serving Platter: Once the lamb chops are baked to perfection, transfer them to a nice serving platter to present them beautifully at the table. Don't forget to spoon over any extra sauce remaining in the baking dish for added flavor.

what goes with it?

Minty Pea Puree: the fresh, vibrant flavors of the pea puree will provide a light, spring-like contrast to the rich and savory lamb chops. Plus, the bright green color will make for a stunning presentation on the plate.

Roasted Baby Potatoes: the crispy skin and soft insides of roasted baby potatoes will offer a nice textural contrast to the creamy sauce and tender lamb chops.

Grilled Asparagus: the slight char and smokiness from grilling the asparagus will add depth of flavor to your lamb chops.

Cranberry Orange Relish: the tartness of the cranberries and the citrusy zing from the orange will cut through the richness of the lamb chops and the creamy sauce.

beverage pairings

Wine Pairings
Merlot: Why? Merlot's smooth and medium-bodied nature will complement the richness of the lamb, while its dark fruit flavors will enhance the meat's savory notes.

Syrah: If you're looking for a bolder option, Syrah's spiciness and earthy undertones can stand up to the robust flavors of the lamb chops. Look for a well-rounded Syrah with balanced tannins.

Chardonnay: For those who prefer white wine, a buttery Chardonnay with oak aging can add a touch of richness to the dish without overpowering the delicate flavors of the lamb. Opt for one with a hint of vanilla for a subtle sweetness.

Other Alcohol Pairings
Scotch: A smoky and peaty Scotch can be a delightful partner to the savory lamb chops. The complex flavors of the whiskey can boost the richness of the dish.

IPA: If beer is more your speed, a hoppy IPA can cut through the fattiness of the lamb with its bitterness and citrus notes.

Gin Martini: A classic Gin Martini with its herbaceous and slightly floral notes can complement the savory lamb chops. The crisp and clean finish of the cocktail can cleanse your palate between each bite.

Non-Alcoholic Pairings
Iced Tea: A simple and refreshing choice, iced tea can provide a light and crisp counterpoint to the richness of the lamb. Opt for unsweetened tea to balance the flavors without adding extra sweetness.

Sparkling Water: For a bubbly alternative, sparkling water can lighten the dish and provide a refreshing contrast.

I'm a big fan of lamb but I prefer simple flavors with it (no sweet sauces) and this recipe was perfect. The lamb was very nicely cooked.

  4. Guest Foodie REVIEW:

my husband and I aren't big on lamb chop but he found this recipe very tasty. I would make this one again. Didn't have any sour cream so used 1/2 cup milk and soured it with vinegar. Couldn't tell the differents.
