crock pot notes

Crock pots/slow cookers all heat differently. There is no standard among manufacturers. Cooking times are suggested guidelines based on our testing. Please adjust cooking times and temps to work with your brand and model of slow cooker.

recipe tips

For a richer flavor, saute the onions and peppers in butter before adding them to the crock pot.

Use chicken thighs for more flavor, but adjust cooking time accordingly. Thighs will take 30-60 minutes longer depending on your crock pot.

Add fresh herbs like parsley or thyme toward the end of cooking for a pop of flavor.

If you prefer a thicker sauce, mix an additional tablespoon of flour with a little water and stir in before the last cooking phase.

If you want a spicier dish, increase the amount of cayenne or add a splash of hot sauce.

Add a splash of white wine to the soup mixture for more flavor.

Garnish with fresh parsley or chives before serving.

Make ahead and let it sit in the fridge overnight to allow flavors to meld for an even better taste.

Try different types of rice, such as brown rice or jasmine, for varied textures and flavors.

Do not overcook the chicken or it may be tough and stringy.

tools needed

Crock Pot: For cooking the chicken and vegetable mixture.

Measuring Cups and Spoons: For measuring ingredients such as the flour, black pepper, green bell pepper, and onion.

Cutting Board: For preparing the vegetables and cutting the chicken breast into small cubes.

Sharp Knife: For chopping the celery, green bell pepper, onion, and cutting the chicken breast into cubes.

Spatula or Spoon: For mixing the ingredients in the crock pot.

what goes with it?

Creamy Mashed Potatoes: Serve alongside Chicken A La King for a rich, comforting meal. The smooth texture of the mashed potatoes will absorb the creamy sauce.

Garlic Bread: This can be a simple accompaniment to mop up the sauce. The garlicky, buttery notes of the bread add a nice contrast to the flavors of the dish.

Green Salad: A light salad with a citrus vinaigrette will help cut through the richness of the Chicken A La King.

Butter Biscuits: Serve these as a side to soak up the creamy sauce. Their flaky, buttery texture will enhance the dish while offering a satisfying contrast.

Stuffed Bell Peppers: Use the same bell peppers from the recipe to create stuffed peppers. Fill them with a mixture of rice and the leftover Chicken A La King for a creative twist.

Pasta: Use the Chicken A La King as a sauce over pasta, such as fettuccine or penne. The hearty sauce will cling to the noodles.

Sweet Corn Fritters: These can be served as a small side dish. Their sweetness complements the savory dish and adds an interesting texture contrast.

Herb Rice: Upgrade the cooked rice by stirring in fresh herbs, such as parsley or thyme, to infuse more flavor. This will enhance the dish while still being a simple side.

Cheddar Cheese: Shred some cheese over the top of the Chicken A La King before serving.

Egg Noodles: A classic alternative to rice, egg noodles can provide a chewy base that works excellently with the creamy sauce.

beverage pairings

Wine Pairings
Chardonnay: A medium- to full-bodied dry Chardonnay can really enhance this dish. Look for one that has a buttery, oaky flavor. The richness will match well with the creamy texture of the soup and chicken.

Sauvignon Blanc: If you prefer something crisp, aim for a Sauvignon Blanc with refreshing acidity and citrus notes. Its bright flavors can complement the vegetables and balance out the dish's creaminess.

Viognier: This wine is fragrant and fruity, often showcasing peach and apricot notes. A good Viognier has a natural weight and smooth finish that fits nicely with the buttery richness of Chicken A La King.

Other Alcohol Pairings
White Wine Spritzer: Mix your favorite dry white wine with a splash of club soda for something refreshing.

Pale Ale: A hoppy yet balanced Pale Ale can stand up to the robust flavors in the dish. Look for a brew that's not overly bitter to complement the meal without overpowering it.

Non-Alcoholic Pairings
Sparkling Water with Lime: Just a splash of lime in your sparkling water makes for an excellent refreshing choice.

Herbal Iced Tea: A cool, herbal iced tea, perhaps chamomile or mint, can pair well. The floral and minty tones will work nicely with the spices in the dish without competing with them.

Carrot Juice: This naturally sweet and earthy choice can perfectly complement the flavors of the vegetables in Chicken A La King, adding a nutritious aspect.

  1. cindy85 REVIEW:

Nice and easy to make, which is the great thing about a Crock Pot. The key is not adding the peas until that very last half hour, so that they stay bright green and pop in your mouth. A good recipe to hang onto.

  2. Valerie REVIEW:

I usually avoid canned soups in recipes but in a crockpot dish like this, they actually work better than a traditional white sauce because they hold up to the long cooking time. The flavor in this recipe is perfect and the texture was identical to the classic stove top version.
