The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.

Once you understand the ratio of water to rice you'll be a pro at cooking rice. If you use a different kind of rice (other than long grain) you may have to adjust the ratio and/or cooking time.
1 cup long grain rice, uncooked
2 cups water
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon butter
Combine the rice, water, salt, and butter in a 1 quart saucepan over medium-high heat.
Bring to a boil, stirring once or twice. Cover, reduce the heat to low, and let simmer on low for 20 minutes. Do not lift the lid until the cook time is up.
Check the rice, all the liquid should be absorbed. If not, cover and cook a few minutes longer. Fluff with a fork before serving.
