Ah, the unassuming envelope of onion soup mix. It's more than just for onion soup (or dip). It adds tremendous flavor (and convenience) in all these recipes.
Thomas Jefferson's Vanilla Ice Cream

ingredients
2 bottles good cream
6 egg yolks
1/2 pound sugar
1 vanilla bean, split
directions
Combine the egg yolks and sugar.
In top of double boiler, combine the cream and vanilla bean. Bring just to a boil, then remove from heat. Pour into egg and sugar mixture; blend well and return to heat. Stir until just boiling; remove from heat. Strain through cheesecloth. Let cool in refrigerator.
Pour into ice cream maker and process as per manufacturer's instructions.
