The Amish keep thing simple as is the case with this tried and true chocolate chip cookie recipe. Nothing fancy, just delicious cookies every time.

serves/makes:

ready in:
  under 30 minutes

ingredients

1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup milk
1 package (12 ounce size) chocolate chips or butterscotch chips

directions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Grease 2 baking sheets.

Place the shortening and sugar in a mixing bowl. Beat on medium speed with an electric mixer until creamed. With the mixer running, add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.

Combine the flour, baking powder, and baking soda in a bowl. With the mixer running, add the milk to the sugar mixture alternately with the flour mixture. Mix well.

Stir in the chocolate chips by hand.

Drop the cookie dough by teaspoonfuls onto the prepared baking sheets. Bake at 400 degrees F for 8 minutes or until the edges start to brown.

Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheets for 2-3 minutes then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Store the cookies in an airtight container. The cookies freeze well.

recipe tips

Make sure all ingredients are at room temperature for even mixing.

Avoid overmixing the cookie dough to prevent a tough texture.

For a chewier cookie, slightly underbake them and allow them to cool on the baking sheet.

Try different types of chips or add-ins for other flavor combinations.

To make uniform cookies, use a cookie scoop or measuring spoon to portion the dough.

For a richer flavor, use brown sugar instead of white sugar or a combination of both.

Try chilling the dough for 30 minutes before baking for thicker, chewier cookies.

Try using parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.

Make a double batch and freeze half of the baked cookies for an easy treat later on.

common recipe questions

Can I substitute butter for the shortening?

You can substitute an equal amount of butter for the shortening, but it will slightly change the texture of the cookies.

Can I use dark or white chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet?

You can use any type of chocolate chips or even butterscotch chips for a different flavor.

Can I add nuts or dried fruit to these cookies?

Yes, chopped nuts or dried fruit can be added to the cookie dough for extra texture and flavor. For best results, substitute some of the chocolate chips for nuts or fruit (to keep the ratio of ingredients the same).

How can I keep my cookies soft?

Store the cookies in an airtight container to retain their softness. Adding a slice of bread can help keep them moist.

Can I freeze the cookie dough?

Yes, the cookie dough can be frozen in teaspoon-sized portions (freeze them in dollops on a parchment lined baking sheet then transfer to an airtight container) and baked from frozen if desired. Just add a few extra minutes to the baking time.

How long will these cookies stay fresh?

Stored in an airtight container, these cookies will stay fresh for up to a week at room temperature. You can also freeze the baked cookies in an airtight container for up to 4 months.

tools needed

Mixing Bowl: To combine the shortening and sugar, and later to mix the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients.

Electric Mixer: To cream the shortening and sugar together and beat in the eggs for the cookie dough.

Baking Sheets: Two baking sheets are required to bake the cookies in the oven. Don't forget to grease them to prevent sticking!

Teaspoon: For dropping the cookie dough onto the baking sheets in teaspoonfuls.

Wire Racks: Used for cooling the cookies once they are done baking. This helps prevent them from becoming soggy on the bottom.

what goes with it?

Ice Cream Sundae: the classic combination of warm chocolate chip cookies and cold ice cream is a match made in dessert heaven. The cookies provide a chewy texture, while the ice cream adds a creamy, cool contrast.

Milkshake: dip these chocolate chip cookies in a milkshake for a fun twist on a classic treat. The milkshake will soften the cookies just enough to create a delightful, creamy bite.

Chocolate Fondue: dip these chocolate chip cookies in a warm chocolate fondue for a decadent dessert experience.

Coffee: enjoy these simple and delicious cookies with a hot cup of coffee. The rich, slightly bitter flavor of the coffee will complement the sweetness of the cookies, creating a perfect balance of flavors.
