ingredients
1 cup lard
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon (heaping) baking powder
3 cups flour, add more if necessary for rolling
directions
Melt lard and set aside to cool until lukewarm.
Sift all dry ingredients together. Add cooled lard to dry ingredients. Add buttermilk. Mix well to form soft dough. Add more flour if dough is too sticky.
Roll dough to 1/2 inch thickness on floured board. Cut large round cookies. Bake at 350 degrees F until brown, about 12 minutes.
