Not to be confused with evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk is very sweet (and very sticky) and used primarily in desserts.

This broccoli cheddar casserole couldn't be easier thrown all together in the slow cooker. Makes a stunningly simple and surprisingly scrumptious dish.

1/4 cup butter or margarine, soft but not melted
1 can (10.75 ounce size) cream of onion soup (or onion soup)
1 can (10.75 ounce size) cream of mushroom soup
1 jar (8 ounce size) cheez whiz
1/2 cup water
1 1/2 cup instant rice, uncooked
1 box (10 ounce size) frozen broccoli florets
Grease the inside of the crock pot.
In a bowl, mix together the butter, soups, cheez whiz, and water until blended. Stir in the rice and broccoli and stir to coat everything in the cheese sauce.
Pour the mixture into the crock pot. Cover the crock pot and cook on high for 2-3 hours or until the rice is cooked and the broccoli is heated through.
Add some cooked, crumbled bacon for an extra layer of flavor.
Try different types of cheese for a unique twist on this classic dish.
You can add some cooked, diced chicken or ham to make this casserole a complete meal.
If the casserole is too thick, you can thin it out with some milk or chicken broth before serving.
Consider adding some garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika for additional seasoning.
To make a healthier version, use low-fat or skim varieties of the soups and cheese spread.
You should use instant rice for this recipe as it will cook properly in the slow cooker. If you do not have instant rice, you can partially cook long-grain white rice and use that instead.
You can use fresh broccoli, but be sure to cook it partially before adding it to the slow cooker.
You can substitute Cheez Whiz with another type of cheese spread or cubed or shredded processed cheese (such as Velveeta or American).
It's best to avoid stirring the casserole while it's cooking to prevent the rice from becoming mushy.
You can add additional cheese or a dollop of sour cream to the mixture for a creamier texture.
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven until heated through.
You can freeze this casserole in a freezer-safe container for up to 2-3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before reheating.
Slow Cooker: For cooking the casserole slowly.
Mixing Bowl: For combining the butter, soups, Cheez Whiz, water, rice, and broccoli.
Measuring Cups: For measuring the water and rice.
Spatula or Large Spoon: For mixing the ingredients thoroughly in the mixing bowl and for transferring the mixture to the slow cooker.
Can Opener: For opening the cans of soup if they are not pop tops.
Cooking Spray or Oil: For greasing the inside of the slow cooker to prevent sticking.
Grilled Chicken: The mild flavor of grilled chicken can balance out the richness of the cheese in the casserole. This pairing adds protein and makes the meal more substantial.
Garlic Bread: The crispy texture of garlic bread provides a crunchy contrast to the creamy casserole. Additionally, the garlic flavor complements the onion and mushroom soups used in the dish.
Caesar Salad: A refreshing Caesar salad can cut through the richness with its tangy dressing. The romaine lettuce adds a crispiness that contrasts nicely with the soft texture of the casserole.
Bacon Bits: Adding crispy bacon on top of the casserole just before serving brings a salty, smoky crunch that provides an appealing texture contrast.
Sour Cream: A dollop of sour cream on top of the casserole can introduce a tangy creaminess that complements the richness of the Cheez Whiz and soups, while also adding moisture.
Hot Sauce: A few dashes of hot sauce can give the casserole an extra kick, balancing out the dish's creaminess with some heat.
