The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.
Dutch Butter Cake with Almond Paste

Dough
2 cups flour
1 cup butter
1 cup caster sugar
1 small egg
1 pinch salt
Filling
2 cups blanched almonds
1/4 cup sugar
1 small egg
1/2 lemon, grated peel
directions
For Dough: Knead all the ingredients for the dough in to a firm ball. Divide the dough in two and press into a buttered pie pan of 1" deep and 8" diameter.
For Filling: Grind the blanched almonds, mix with sugar, beaten egg and lemon peel and grind once more. Place this almond paste on top of the dough layer and press the other half on top of both.
Bake in a moderate (350 degrees F) oven until golden brown and done, about 1 hour. Cool down Remove from pan on wire rack. Cut in wedges or diamonds.
