crock pot notes

Crock pots/slow cookers all heat differently. There is no standard among manufacturers. Cooking times are suggested guidelines based on our testing. Please adjust cooking times and temps to work with your brand and model of slow cooker.

recipe tips

For even cooking, cut the potatoes into equal-sized pieces.

Add a splash of white wine to the crock pot for extra flavor.

Try adding herbs like thyme or rosemary for different flavors.

Taste and adjust the seasoning after cooking, as flavors can sometimes mellow during slow cooking.

If you prefer, you can saute the onions and garlic in olive oil before adding them to the slow cooker for a richer flavor.

Garnish the finished dish with fresh parsley or feta cheese.

Adjust the amount of garlic based on your preference.

Remember to keep the lid on the slow cooker closed as much as possible to maintain temperature during cooking.

common recipe questions

Can I use boneless chicken for this recipe?

Yes, boneless chicken pieces can be used, though bone-in chicken often provides more flavor and results in juicier meat. Just adjust the cooking time as boneless chicken will cook faster.

What type of potatoes work best in this recipe?

Yukon Gold or red potatoes work best in this recipe as they hold their shape during cooking. Russet potatoes can break down and become mushy.

How can I add more flavor?

You can marinate the chicken in olive oil, lemon juice, and garlic for a few hours before adding it to the slow cooker. This will infuse more flavor.

Can I substitute fresh oregano for dried oregano?

Use 2 to 3 times the amount of fresh oregano compared to dried, as fresh herbs have a milder flavor.

What if I don't have zucchini?

If zucchini is unavailable, you can substitute it with other vegetables like bell peppers, green beans, or even carrots.

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

You can prepare the ingredients a day in advance, store them in the refrigerator, and assemble everything into the slow cooker when you are ready to cook.

How do I know when the chicken is done cooking?

The chicken is done when it reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees F and is no longer pink in the center. The potatoes should also be tender.

How do I store leftovers?

Let the chicken and vegetables cool then store in an air tight container for up to 3 days.

Can I freeze leftovers?

Yes, leftovers can be frozen. Allow them to cool completely, then transfer to freezer-safe containers. They will keep for about 2-3 months.

How should I reheat the leftovers?

Reheat leftovers in a microwave or in the oven (cover with foil and heat at 350 degrees F for 15-20 minutes) or until warmed through. If they seem dry, add a splash of chicken broth or water.

tools needed

Crock Pot: For cooking the Greek chicken and potatoes.

Measuring Spoons: For measuring ingredients such as the dried oregano, salt, and black pepper.

Cutting Board and Sharp Knife: For cutting the potatoes, onions, and zucchini and also the garlic if not using a garlic press.

Scrub Brush: Helpful for cleaning the potatoes before cutting to remove any dirt or residue.

Spatula or Spoon: For stirring the oil mixture with herbs.

Garlic Press (optional): To quickly and easily mince the garlic rather than chopping it by hand.

what goes with it?

Cucumber Salad: A simple salad of diced cucumbers, tomatoes, and feta cheese adds crunch and acidity, balancing out the rich, cooked chicken and starchy potatoes.

Pita Bread: Soft, warm pita is perfect for scooping up the chicken and potatoes.

Roasted Vegetables: Additional roasted bell peppers, carrots, or eggplant can provide more texture and flavor variety.

Feta Cheese Crumble: Sprinkling crumbled feta over the finished dish adds a salty flavor that melds nicely with the other Greek flavors.

Grilled Lemon Wedges: Serving grilled lemon wedges alongside offers a bright, acidic burst of flavor.

Olives: A side of marinated olives adds to the dish's Mediterranean flair.

Greek Yogurt: Swirling a dollop of Greek yogurt over the chicken can add creaminess and tang.

beverage pairings

Wine Pairings
Sauvignon Blanc: A crisp Sauvignon Blanc works well here. Its bright acidity complements the herbal flavors from the oregano and garlic. Look for one with citrus and green apple notes.

Chardonnay: Opt for an unoaked Chardonnay; it's bright and fruity without the buttery feel of the oaked versions. Its smoothness can balance the richness of the chicken.

Assyrtiko: This Greek white wine adds an authentic touch. Its zesty character gives you a taste of the Mediterranean.

Other Alcohol Pairings
Margarita: A fresh margarita with lime juice and a hint of salt can pair nicely as the acidity and freshness will go with the flavors of the chicken and potatoes nicely.

Moscow Mule: This refreshing cocktail balances the savory notes of the dish using ginger beer and lime juice.

Ouzo: This traditional Greek spirit has anise flavors that can pair well with the aromatic herbs. Just sip it alongside your dish for a twist of Mediterranean vibes.

Non-Alcoholic Pairings
Sparkling Water with Lemon: A zingy sparkling water with a splash of lemon brightens up each bite and offers a refreshing cleanse.

Cucumber Mint Cooler: A blend of muddled cucumber, mint, and soda can provide a cool contrast to the warm dish.

Herbal Iced Tea: A lightly brewed herbal tea with flavors like chamomile or mint can complement the dish's earthy flavors while staying light and refreshing.

  1. DFW REVIEW:

Four stars becauwse I felt it needed more flavor. Like maybe just doubling the oregano mixture because the flavor was good just not enough. I used chicken thighs because that is what I had but next time I think I'll use a mix of pieces.
