My mother found this recipe in the Boston Globe around 1950 and it's been passed along in the family since then. It has often been my birthday cake. (My younger daughter made it for me this year). I make it about once or twice a year for faculty meetings (I teach high school) or social get-togethers. It is always a hit, especially if I bring vanilla ice cream along with it. Sometimes I'll make it in a 9x13 glass dish with a double recipe. Still terrific. It's easy to make and has never "failed".
