3 eggs, separated
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 cup light brown sugar packed
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 cup strong cold brewed coffee
3/4 cup Kahlua

Kahlua Frosting

6 tablespoons butter
1 pound sifted powdered sugar
3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
3 tablespoons Kahlua
3 tablespoons hot coffee

directions

Kahlua Chocolate Cake: Grease and flour 2 9-inch cake pans. Preheat oven 350 degrees F.

Beat egg whites till frothy; then beat in sugar until stiff peaks forms. Set aside.

Cream butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Beat in egg yolks one at a time.

Sift flour, cocoa, baking soda together. Add to creamed mixture alternately with coffee and Kahlua; blend well. Fold egg whites into batter.

Pour into prepared pans. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until done. Cool 10 minutes, invert on wire rack, remove pans. Cool completely before frosting.

Kahlua Frosting: In a large bowl, cream the butter and sifted powdered sugar. Add cocoa powder, Kahlua and hot coffee; beat until smooth.

    I love that this cake is strictly homemade, not one of those crappy box cakes. And I only have one word to describe it, TASTY!!! I made it for my mom's birthday and she loved it!

    I did this recipe as a single cake, instead of a layered cake, and it still turned out beautifully (obviously used less icing though, and baked for a bit longer) was a big hit at work!
