2 1/4 cups flour
1 2/3 cup sugar
2/3 cup cocoa powder
1 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/4 cup water
3/4 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
directions
Heat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour baking pan, 13 X 9 inches OR two 9 inch OR three 8 inch round layer pans.
Measure all the ingredients into a large mixer bowl. Blend 1/2 minute on low speed, scraping the bowl constantly. Beat three minutes on high speed, scraping the bowl often. Pour into the prepared pan(s).
Bake oblong about 45 minutes. Bake the layers 30 to 35 minutes. Test cake for doneness by inserting a wooden pick into the center to see if it comes clean. If it comes clean - the cake is done.
