1 cup boiling water
1 cup chopped dates
1 3/4 cup sifted flour
1/4 cup baking cocoa
1 teaspoon soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1 cup chocolate chips
directions
Pour boiling water over dates, let cool.
Sift together flour, cocoa, soda and salt.
Cream shortening and add sugar. Cream until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla and beat well. Add the flour alternately with the date mixture, blend.
Pour batter into a 15" x 10" x 2" pan which has been greased and floured. Sprinkle on chocolate chips and nuts and press lightly into batter.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 25-30 minutes.
