The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.

1 pound butter
2 cups sugar
6 eggs
2 cups flour, PLUS"PLUS" means this ingredient in addition to the one on the next line, often with divided uses
2 cups self-rising flour
2 cups golden raisins
1 pound cherries (green, red, or both)
4 cups pecans
almond flavoring
Mix butter, sugar, and eggs. Use one cup flour to mix in fruit and nuts. Mix rest of flour into batter and add flavoring. Stir batter into fruit and nut mixture.
Grease and flour tube pan. Put batter in tube pan and bake at 275 degrees F for 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Refrigerate for smooth slicing.
