ingredients

8 ounces elbow macaroni
1 pound ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
1 can (15 ounce size) pizza sauce
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1 package (3.5 ounce size) sliced pepperoni
1/2 teaspoon salt, optional

directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 2-quart baking dish.

Cook the pasta as directed on the package until al dente. Drain well.

Meanwhile, brown the ground beef and onion in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring frequently, until the meat is cooked and the onion is soft. Drain off any excess grease.

Stir in the pizza sauce, cooked pasta, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, and salt and mix well. Transfer the mixture to the greased baking dish.

Place the baking dish in the oven and bake at 350 degrees F for 40-45 minutes or until bubbly in the middle.

Serve hot.

recipe tips

Use a mix of cheeses for added flavor, such as cheddar or Italian blend.

Add herbs like oregano, basil, or Italian seasoning to enhance the pizza flavor.

Add crushed red pepper flakes to the mixture for a spicy kick.

Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes after baking before serving to help it set.

If you like a lot of cheese, feel free to add more mozzarella or a cheese blend on top before baking.

For a unique twist, try adding a layer of cream cheese mixed with garlic powder in the middle of the casserole.

Experiment with different sauces; BBQ sauce or Alfredo can give a new spin on the flavor.

common recipe questions

Can I use a different type of pasta?

You can substitute elbow macaroni with other pasta shapes such as penne, rotini, or fusilli. Just make sure that the pasta is cooked until al dente to avoid becoming mushy during baking.

What type of ground meat can I use?

You can use other types of ground meat such as ground turkey, chicken, or sausage. The taste will vary slightly, but any of these will work well.

Can I add other ingredients like bell peppers or olives?

You can add any of your favorite pizza toppings, such as bell peppers, olives, mushrooms, or even sauteed spinach.

Can I make this casserole ahead of time?

You can prepare the casserole in advance and refrigerate it before baking. Just be sure to cover it tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. When ready to bake, you may need to add additional cooking time since it will be cold from the refrigerator.

How should I store leftovers?

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Make sure to cool it to room temperature before sealing.

Can I freeze this casserole?

You can freeze it. Allow the casserole to cool completely, then cover tightly with plastic wrap and aluminum foil. It can be frozen for up to 3 months.

How do I reheat the casserole?

To reheat, cover the casserole with foil and warm it in the oven at 350 degrees F for about 20-30 minutes, or until heated through. You can also reheat individual portions in the microwave.

What if my casserole gets too dry while baking?

If you find the casserole is drying out, you can cover it with foil during part of the baking time to help retain moisture.

tools needed

Skillet: A large skillet for browning the ground beef and onion over medium-high heat.

Measuring Cups and Spoons: For measuring the shredded cheese and salt.

2-Quart Baking Dish: For transferring the pasta mixture and baking the casserole in the oven.

Colander: For draining the cooked elbow macaroni after boiling.

Spatula or Wooden Spoon: For stirring the ground beef and onion in the skillet, as well as mixing the pasta and sauce together.

Knife and Cutting Board: For chopping the onion before cooking.

what goes with it?

Garlic Bread: A side of garlic bread would provide a crunchy texture contrast to the casserole. The garlic and butter flavors complement the pizza sauce nicely.

Caesar Salad: The crisp romaine and tangy dressing add a refreshing element alongside the hearty casserole.

Italian Sausage: Crumbled cooked Italian sausage added to the casserole heightens the meatiness of the dish, creating a more robust flavor.

Pepperoncini: Serving pickled pepperoncini adds a bright, tangy kick that balances the rich flavors of the casserole. Their acidity provides a nice contrast.

Sliced Olives: Offer sliced black or green olives as a topping. They introduce a salty and briny note.

Grated Parmesan: Sprinkling freshly grated Parmesan cheese on top before serving boosts the umami factor and adds a salty bite.

Fresh Basil: Chopped fresh basil sprinkled on top gives a burst of herbal freshness that lightens up the dish and adds a nice color contrast.

Fried Zucchini: Crunchy fried zucchini rounds can add texture and a different flavor, offering a crispy side that pairs well with the heavier casserole.

beverage pairings

Wine Pairings
Chianti: This Italian red wine, with its bright acidity and cherry flavors, complements the savory aspects of the beef and balances out the richness. Look for one that's medium-bodied.

Zinfandel: A Zinfandel's fruity and spicy notes are fantastic with the pepperoni and beef. Its slightly jammy character adds a nice contrast to the rich, cheesy dish. Choose one with bold fruit flavors but also a hint of spice.

Merlot: A smooth, fruit-forward Merlot offers dark fruit flavors like plum and blackberry that work well with the meaty casserole. Look for one that's well-balanced and not too tannic.

Other Alcohol Pairings
Amber Ale: This balanced beer brings a touch of sweetness and a slight caramel malt character that goes well with the hearty flavors of the casserole.

Italian Lager: With its clean and crisp profile, an Italian lager can provide a refreshing contrast to the richness of the dish. Look for a light-bodied version.

Spiced Rum Cocktail: A spiced rum mixed with cola can play nicely with the savory elements of the casserole. The warmer spices in the rum can add some interesting flavors that echo the pizza vibe.

Non-Alcoholic Pairings
Sparkling Apple Juice: This bubbly drink brings a sweet and fruity taste that can brighten up the flavors of the casserole while offering a nice fizzy contrast.

Tomato Basil Soup: This might sound a bit different, but a warm cup of tomato basil soup can really enhance the pizza flavors of the casserole. The savory and herby notes tie in perfectly.

Lemonade: A refreshing glass of lemonade with a hint of tartness will cut through the richness of the dish and provide a nice contrast to the flavors. Look for a version that's fresh and not too sweet.
